I'm 4 months new to soaping. Loving it. Got bajillion questions!

re: fragrance I've enjoyed store bought soap. Some leave a scent on your skin while others haven't. What is the cause? In handcrafted soaps, is the quantity of fragrance a factor? And honestly, I sometimes do not want to smell like my soap as I wear purchased fragrance. Sometimes I DO like to smell like the soap. Is this a hit or miss or is there some logic behind the soap formulation?

A lot of store bought soaps are way over scented in my opinion.

But on why a fragrance will stick to your skin after washing depends on a lot of different things. Like the strength of the scent, how much you used (But please don't go over supplier or IFRA recommendations no matter how strong you want it to smell), the smell of your soaping oils/butters, any additives in your soap that may make the scent stick more, etc.

But if you really want to smell like the scent that you use in your soap, just make a perfume with it. Or a lotion, body butter or solid lotion.

I was actually gifted a handmade soap from Hawaii and guess what it burned my skin. No not lye heavy it was over fragranced. So IFRA parameters are a must imo.

Another anecdote about fragrance. I use a BB fragrance at 1/2 the usage rate and it is more beautiful than at full rate. Why is that? I don't have a clue but it is a fact!

I've been burned by over fragranced soap as well. Turned out the person had used 1/2 an ounce of FO for one 4 oz bar of soap, which was more than double the IFRA recommendation. Apparently her customers loved that they were over fragranced because they were using them as car air fresheners.

Yikes! It would be better to make and sell air fresheners than damage someone's skin.
