I just made my 4th batch ever of CP today and while I was cleaning up I realized I forgot to add the castor oil! It is 5% of my recipe and I superfatted 5%. Do you think it will be ok? It is a beautiful green and red in the pot swirl that I am quite proud of :(

Sorry to say but no, that won't be good soap for your skin. You can rebatch it though and add in your 5%

I know you're going to loose the colors, but rebatching and adding the missed oil is your best bet.

Thanks ladies. Does this mean that the soap is lye heavy. After re-reading my notes, it turns out that I did use a little of the castor oil when i mixed my colorants, but I didn't use it all, maybe about a 1/4 of it.

Another question, I made another batch (with all the oils!) and when I un-molded it, there were a few areas that looked like oil was seeping out. I touched it and it feels like oil and not water/lye. What would cause this?

It sounds like your soap is lye heavy. That little bit of castor in your color might help out, but the soap would be very drying, even after a full cure. I normally superfat at least 7% as that's what my skin likes.

The oil could be glycerin seeping out. I would give it a couple of days. It will most likely just absorb back in. Sometimes that happnes when the soap gets hot, or tried to overheat.

Bummer, guess I have to throw out that soap since it is lye heavy. Shouldn't it zap me? I tested it so I would know what it felt like thinking it would zap me, but nothing.... Does it always zap when it is lye heavy?

Good news, the oil on the other soap is reabsorbing! So happy about that!

I have to say that is forum is priceless! Everyone sharing their knowledge and helping out us newbie's! THANK YOU!

Lye heavy soap would be extremely drying and could burn the skin.

Yeah, I will definitely throw it out - don't want to burn my skin! Since it didn't zap me, how would I know if it was lye heavy if I didn't realize I forgot oils or mismeasured?

You don't need to throw it out, you can rebatch it! Toss it in a crock pot and add your oils that you left out. Look on the net for hot process method and you will find crock pot tutorials, that is basically it, just that you already have the soap made, so just add the oils you are missing.
As for the zap, you could not have a zap because it could be okay lye wise, but it is still not a good soap for your skin because it could not be superfatted past 1% and that is more laundry soap than body soap. So too drying, whether its lye heavy or not.

Thanks! I'll try rebatching and see what happens.
