I have just bought a litre of hemp oil to try it. Sound very rich. Also hemp hulled seeds for scrub. Wondering if anyone here has used hemp oil and if so their experience please. Is it worth the dollars or just a gimmick? In Australia we cannot use it as food. Am able to use it oin soap though.
If I was to use it what percentage should I go for? :?: Hugs Liz

From my experience, hemp oil has a short shelf life. If you decide to use it in soap, I would try it at a small %.

Add some vitamin E or ROE to your oil and/or store the hemp oil in the fridge or the freezer to prolong its shelf life, which is about 6 months to two years (I have had cold pressed and unrefined oil with a 2 yr shelf life), depending upon the type you get and the storage. It is a sensitive oil that will degrade under excessive light exposure and any fluctuation in temperature, another reason that refrigeration or freezing is good for this oil. It is suitable for food and cosmetic use, but should not be heated or, if heated, only heated lightly.

It is quite lovely in lotions and creams, but is great in soap too. It contributes a light, creamy/silky lather to the bar.
The oil is a great source of vitamins and minerals. It has anti-inflammatory and anti-ageing properties. It is rich in anti-oxidants. It is a non-greasy oil that is readily absorbed by the pores, where it acts as an emollient that helps heal dry skin and burns. It contains moisture balancing properties, softens, soothes, rejuvenates and moisturizes the skin. It helps to heal skin lesions and fights (skin) inflammations.

It can be used up to 30% of your total oils in a soap recipe, but too much of this oil left unsaponified in a soap will cause it to spoil. It can be used as a luxury healing/moisturizing oil in your soap in amounts of 10%-15%. It really has a lot of great things present in its make up and is a wonderful oil to consume. Although I do not buy my oils there, Mountain Rose herbs has a nice education section on all the products they sell. If you'd like more info on this oil, I suggest you check there.I really love my hemp oil and have uses it in a few formulations going back a good many years!

:) Thanks for all this great information. I am going to make a few soaps tonight with 10% hemp oil and hulled seeds. Have some hemp flour to add as well. Here in Australia we are able to buy these hemp products BUT not for food use. Ridiculous I know as from what I have read it is a great healthy oil and food. So my soap is going to be luxurious. I sourced them from Hemp Foods Australia but shall check out this other site. Want to make up a blurb for customers too.I have been making so much lard soap lately as have embraced this lushness and maybe hemp will be my next fav. Just the cost is crazy. Shall let you know how my soap turns out. Hugs Liz 8)

Forgot to ask what amount of superfat should I aim for? Is 7% too high. Also I was thinking of individual moulds to keep the heat under control and freezer for a few hours then fridge? As you mentioned it is a fragile oil re heat. I shall have to buy some vit E. Can I get that from the health food store and if so what strength ?
I might make a very small 2 bar batch tonight to test run and wait till I buy the vit E for larger amounts.
I have a new mould to play with too. Arrived from USA Friday.Hugs Liz

Depending on your recipe, 10-15% superfat "might" make the soap soft and oily with not many bubbles.

I don't think she meant 10-15% superfat but rather you can use it at 10-15% of your oils. You can see the predicted hardness of your formula using SoapCalc or SoapMaker. I use 7% superfat all the time but don't use hemp oil much due to the fragility.

Sorry I was away but no, I didn't mean super fat but was giving the max amount I'd use in my recipe if I just wanted a nice, luxurious bar.

As for the superfat, that all depends upon your climate and preference. I use 6% usually and Irena uses 7%.
