I have never made a single oil soap before and want to give it a go. I don't have the patience to do castile so I figured I would try salt bars. I know to SF at 20% and all but I have some questions. First, What is the purpose of these do they do anything special? Second, What is a good amount of salt to use? Third, I know dead sea salt doesn't work but I do have 5 lbs of dendric salt would that work? And finally with that high of a SF is there a certain reson why they don't get plagued by the dreaded DOS? I will be doing these in and individual silicone mold since they set up pretty quickly so my oil to lye ratio will be 364g CO, 52glye, 153g water ( This is for the how much salt part :) )

I like to use salt bars like a mask...leaving the lather on for 15 min or so.
They leave my skin with a matte finish. The lather is sort of like a foam.
I've used a fine pink salt with one batch. And table salt with the other.
16oz salt for 16 oz oil. I used the BB 12bar silicone mold.
I don't know about the dos and high superfat....but didn't had an issue
with either batch.

I use 50% salt and use regular table salt. I've never tried dendritic salt, so that I don't know. Coconut based soaps lather better in hard water or ocean water. Salt bars don't have a lot of bubbles, they are more creamy.

Irena, When You Say You Use 50% Salt Is That 50% Of Total Weight ( Oil + Water ). Also Do You Just Add The Salt At Trace?

I'm sorry to say this, but sea salt can make your soaps weep.
I would go 100% coconut with 20% superfat with no other added butters. This type of soap gets hard fast and you don't need another hard butter in it.

PS. Lye is still very active at trace. There is no guarantee that any added oil or butter added at trace will end up as your superfat. Add all you oils and/or butters right up front and use a lye calc. All superfat means is that you are using less lye, so the soap will not be lye heavy.

This is a picture of sea Salt bars I made last week.
I Use Sea Salt at nearly 1/1 ratio of salt and oil. Never had it weep. I add my FO and color to my salt and add at light trace to batter. I set my oven for 170 and pour my batter into a silicone loaf mold and put in oven and turn off heat and leave for 2 hrs. I take out unmold and cut. I cant seem to keep these made. They are a very good exfoliant. At 20% SF it leaves your skin feeling smooth. I use it about twice a week myself. Sometimes I use on my face.

That is a really beautiful bar... I love that color!

So you figure your lye like you're making a straight CO soap, mix it up, then just add the same amount (by weight) of salt? Salt bars are on my to do list, I think I'll have to do more reading on this tonight.

What particular type of sea salt do you use (like, is it morton's sea salt, from a soap supplier, or something else?). And why no dead sea salt?

Thanks! I love how they turned out, and they couldn't have turned out that well without all the awesome info and advice I've gotten on here and around the web! And yes, I will be making more... lots more!

Hi Brandislee, your bars look great. What receipe did you finally use? I'm also planning to do my first salt bar.

Can we subsitute salt with sugar?
What is the benefit of salt or sugar bar? Can i use epsom salt to make salt bars? Else i'll go ahead with regular table salt.

Thanks.
