Soapbuddy said: I have been making soap for a very long time, so please understand where I'm coming from. I use the very best oils/butters that I can get. During the saponofication process, the soap makes its own glycerin, why would I want to add more?

I was thinking about that earlier too. I reread a few of the posts after I'd posted then I got to not really understanding why would you add extra glycerin to your soap. Unless maybe they're trying to manufacture a glycerine type melt and pour soap?

It's all still very interesting to me, but other than what you guys have posted, I really dont know much else about it one way or the other.....lol

True glycerin will not saponify by itself...that is why we add soy oil. We also add 4ounces of castor oil. It takes a little longer to saponify but it does saponify. As for adding more glycerin...you say potatoes I say Taters. :) .

My Grandmother used to make soap too! I think back then you had to...or buy it from someone else...which they didn't have the money for. My Mom watched...she said she hated the smell.

We are so happy, we came up with the right formula for liquid soap this week. The ph is 7.05. Allergy wise I think my family will be able to use it.

maggielayne,
How do you make this soap solid?
Both soy and castor are very soft oils.

All,

Quite a spirited debate we have here. Thats GOOD!

Soap, is, well, soap. The stuff they sell at the store is "skin cleanser" and not soap.

"Raw glycerin" is not soap. But, glycerin can be saponified. The properties will vary with feed stock.

I will add a few links and would encourage everyone reading this thread to click them and read. Folks who make bio-d glycerin soap do strive for the cleanest product possible.

Melt and pour soaps found at local craft stores claim they are 100% glycerin.... I am not sure about that. I don't know defiantly, I just doubt they are 100% because most of the "typical" melt and pour I have done lather quite well. Also, I have never found a listing of the "feed stock" that the glycerin has been made from.

bio-d glycerin does contain, methanol, water, biodiesel and some unreacted oil. Since the object is to saponify ALL of the FFA, glycerin, and oil the SAP will vary, perhaps batch to batch. IF there is remaining NaOH or KOH, this will come as a "lye discount" to take into consideration. Some folks, do a "superfatting" of sorts to account for any extra lye. But, having said that, any excess lye makes soap during the original reaction. BAD for bio-d yield, GOOD for soapmaking.

The following link is a discussion of what is in "raw glycerin" from one biodiesel producer:

ALL of the methanol should be recovered from the glycerin in an environmentally friendly way.

This post is about recovering methanol from glycerin:

And finally, here is the topic of "What to do with bio-d glycerin" :

I do believe bio-d soap is safe and effective. It is only called "Biodiesel Soap" because it is made from the by-product of biodiesel production.

The only thing I think I can add is this, make very sure that the "commercial" feed stock you are using for your soap is what it says it is.

If you are making your soap from oils and not doing melt and pour, you have control over the entire process.

If you like melt and pour better because of it's ease, I would suggest you only buy from trusted sources who know what they are doing.

Big Box craft stores are just that - big box chain stores. 100% "glycerin" I have purchased from them, was actually a melt and pour soap. I am not saying what they sell isn't safe. I would ask the origin of the product with all the concern lately with tainted products coming from abroad.

HTH
