Has anyone here made CP soap with collected rain water? I've seen people do it in videos and wondered if anyone had personal experience advice. Some said running it through Brita type filters 2-3+ times helps get out any impurities. I also heard rain water can be a bit more acidic so it'll neutralize the lye faster. Coming into rain season, was just thinking of ideas. Possible? Good? Bad? Tips?

While you certainly can use any type of water, and our ancestors most certainly used rain and creek water, you really don't know what you will get in addition to the water. Our world is so polluted that drinking rain water and eating fresh snow is no longer recommended. Of course the content will vary depending on your geographical location as well as other environmental variables, but You do seem to understand the potential issues, so if you want to try it, go for it! Soaping is a journey, so wander off the path once in a while and enjoy the new scenery! I say, have some fun and let us know what you think when you are done!

Oh yes, Tammy, I wouldn't touch the stuff fresh lol - but that's why I was asking about putting it through a filtration system. I have those water bottle filters that take muddy water and turn it into clean drinking water - so I know I could make it safe. I just wondered if anyone else tried it.

I know people that use rain water all the time. Some use a filter system, some do not. Some live in rural areas, some in town. It certainly won't kill anyone, so go for it. The worst that could happen is that the ph would be off in the end, or that you would have some mineral issues when mixing the lye. But if you filter, the mineral issue will be a moot point, so maybe you have a ph issue in the end, but I doubt it. Only one way to find out......go for it!

Another soaper in my area uses snow melt but I don't know if/how they filter it. Worth a try! :)

Is there a good big box brand store I can get pH strips at? Or the ones for aquarium water testing work? I ordered some online once upon a time ago, but not sure where to get locally that I can go grab some today

The pH is actually one of my smallest worries with rain water. I dislike the pollutants and "germs" that are in it. And a brita type filter can't touch most of the pollutant particles, their filter size is too large! Would really need a reverse osmosis filter system to get the goo out of it. Especially if you live in or near a big city, or in the wind path from one.

I would think a swimming pool supply would carry PH test strips.
