Teach Soap

I was looking at a YouTube video and the lady used craft foam to line her mold. Has anyone done this? I was wondering if it would work and how it would hold up over time.

That's one I haven't heard of before. Hmm. I'm not even sure what craft foam is. I'll have to look that up.

I have heard of people using no melt quilter's mylar and making their own silicone liners (which seemed way too involved for me).

Craft form melts when heated, and breaks down remarkably fast when in contact with water. I'd also worry about the soap-loving mold and bacterial families inhabiting it as it is quite porous! I'm not sure how lye reacts with it.

Craft foam is thin sheets of foam that can be cut easily. There are a lot of kids crafts done with this lately. It kinda reminds me of silicone. I was just wondering if it could be used because it looked so easy to line a mold and then just peel it off.

Oh well....back to the freezer paper.

Yes sapxn032, I LOVE craft foam to line my wooden moulds, it is so simple to peel away from the soap and you can wash it thoroughly time after time. I have separate pieces for sides, bottom and ends and if it is a tight enough fit there are no leaks. It shouldn't be any higher than your mould otherwise it may buckle a little in places. I gel my soaps and it is fine with that as well.

I think it's worth a try. They are pretty durable & like retmcp said, they seem similar to silicone. I think I might actually give it a try next time, I have such a hard time getting paper/bags to stay in place & are constantly leaving wrinkles. Plus, who doesn't love a reusable lining?

I did some research on these foam sheets for you! They are made of a combination of polystyrene and hydroflourocarbon (HFC) chains. When heated there is a possibility of the HFCs combusting or melting. The polystyrene can withstand the lye, but the HFC can't. A gas is produced when the lye interacts with the HFCs that can make you pretty sick.

So if you do use this, or want to try, please do so in a super well ventilated area!
