I went to a local farmer's market tonight and saw two soap booths. I have read some of the "horror" stories about other soapers out there that don't seem too interested in learning the craft. Well, tonight I can say I have been initiated into this club. Don't get me wrong, I'm hardly an elitist and I'm hardly the greatest soapmaker to ever walk this planet, but..... I think I have been slightly scarred for life now. Just when I started to think that these stories were legends.....

But I guess it's a good thing....because now seeing some of the competition, I now know what I can mark my items up to. Nevermind that I nearly fainted after walking away from each.

I know what you mean. Why other soapers think that we are trying to steal their recipe is beyond me. There is room for everyone. What happened to you?

Oh I hear ya!

I went to a craft show a couple months ago and was just aghast. This soaper had done nothing more than literally melt, color, fragrance, and pour into a mold. Don't get me wrong. There is nothing wrong with that method, but hers looked awful. Completely obvious she wasn't really into the art of it. All her colors were dark, muddled and dull. Completely boring. Even her packaging screamed blah.

She had a few other body products (no idea what they were since they were in plain unmarked bottles) and was charging what I thought was outrageous prices for all her products.

To boot she was calling it her "homemade" products. I talked to her for a minute about her stuff and she was very unwilling to tell me anything about it other than she only did melt and pour and premade bases for her other products. Not sure if it was because she did not know much about the things I was asking or if she just didn't want to divulge.

She claimed to be selling for the last 5 years. If she is my (eventually) competition, I think I will be ok.

OK, Anaskiya, here goes...

@Irena: That's what cracks me up....because there's nothing "secret" about the art...it's just a matter of research...not to mention that if your soaps/products are really wonderful and great, they'll sell themselves.

@Amber: Precisely most of what I was thinking when I saw these two soaper vendors last night. It was so hard looking at their prices (one was a M&P, the other CP) BOTH were outrageously priced that it was offensive to me - the M&P was selling a gift set of a soap and a dish for over $14! (And it was only shrink-wrapped together). I understand free market and all that but a lack of knowledge about ingredients, much less the fact that neither had ingredients labels, really bothered me. But, like you said, I figure I will be fine when it comes time for me to start selling. It gives me that much more fire in my belly to get it going, that's for sure.
