Teach Soap

Help! This was my first attempt at making soap with buttermilk. I think It overheated but really have no idea. I mixed the batch at 100 or 110 degrees to light trace. Poured it into a wood mold and covered it with a blanket for 24 hours. I had leftover so I experimented and put some in silicone cups. When I cut it after 24 hours this is the result. A ring in the center surrounded by a darker ring. The two end pieces of the loaf and the ones in the silicone mold turned out perfect. These have been drying for 2 weeks with no changes in color. What went wrong and can it be fixed? Thanks for any help you can give

That looks like a partial gel to me. The smaller the mold, the harder it is to generate enough heat to completely gel. I wouldn't worry about it at this stage. Just give it a nice long cure time.

So can you avoid this by putting your freshly poured soap directly into the freezer if you don't think it will fully gell?

Thank you soapbuddy! I was wondering if it was a partial gel at one point. I feel much better now. I guess my niece will only be getting the nice looking end pieces for her baby Hey, I needed more soap for myself anyway... I will be putting my milk based soaps in the freezer from now on!

Call it "Sunrise" and you'll turn that ring into a feature.
