Hi There,

I've been making soaps using the Lye Calculator and suddenly its just dawned on me I haven't included the oil used to superfat in this equation. Do I even though I add this at trace?

I haven't superfatted previous soaps but the last two have been sligthly softer (using the same recipe) would this be the reason why?

Thanks heaps,

Micaela

You need to decide on your superfat percentage, put that % into the box on the lye calc that asks for it, then add the lye bath to all of your oils.
You do NOT need to hold out any oils for a superfat. You cannot determine which oil will be the superfatting agent by adding it a different time, it doesn't work that way. The lye will take what the lye takes (there are oils with higher unsaponifiables in them, but that is a different conversation).
You do not need to add any "extra" oil into your recipe or the lye calc, you just need to alter the % in the superfat box. It will automatically figure the amount of lye to give you that % of superfat.

Any additional oil added, that is not calculated in the recipe, will alter the superfat % and certainly can impact the quality of the soap, including its hardness.
