Teach Soap

I have wanted to do some of that fancy swirling. The Peacock swirl and that kind of stuff. However, I don't have a slab mold but I do have a
13.25 X 3.5 X 2.75 homemade wood loaf mold that I have had very good luck with. It is easy to line. My soap gels and it is easy to get out.

So. Last night I couldn't sleep so I laid there thinking about soaping and it dawned on me if I put two pieces of wood in the bottom of the mold I now had a nice little slab that measures 13.25 X 3.5 X 1.25 which I can cut into six nice bars. Tada!!!!!!

Does anyone know what the material is that Ann Marie puts in the bottom and the sides of her wood molds as a liner and is this something I can purchase somewhere and cut to fit my mold?

The 5 lb mold I have from BB uses a silicone liner. You can make your own custom, super thin, silicone sheets to line your mold, but it takes work. Here's the best tutorial I've seen go by on the web. I haven't tried it. Seems like way too much work to me.

You can get a smaller silicon slab mold for about $10. I have one of them and love it. I've also got a ChefsMate version of it.

Oh - and I've heard you can use "Quilter's Mylar" thin sheets to line molds with also. Haven't seen what that looks like in person yet. I need to stop by a Joann's when I pass by one.

And finally, I've heard of people using painter drop plastic as a super thin liner. I haven't tried that.

Eeek. Your right. That is too much work. I wonder about these silicone baking mats I see advertised. I wonder if I could cut them up?

You could use a silpat type silicone baking sheet, but the ones I have are thick.

You do know you can use freezer paper, right? I use freezer paper on my non-silicone slab and log molds. Shiny side up/toward the soap. You can use masking or painters tape to hold it in place after it's been cut & folded. Tons of youtube videos on lining molds with freezer paper.

When I saw your question, I was thinking permanent lining for a custom mold, but I use freezer paper by default for most non-silicone molds.

plschrader, I'm curious as to why you have to put two pieces of wood in the bottom of the mold? All you need to do is make enough soap batter to fill the mold 1.25" deep instead of the full 2.75". I do this all the time with my molds.
