Teach Soap

Hi There,

Eventually I'd like to do a shaving soap but put it in a container with a lid. Is it ill-advised to pour into plastic / glass / aluminium cosmetic pots?

I'm asking a lot of questions this week!

You cannot put a cp soap into an aluminum container, it must be stainless steel. You cannot put a cp/hp/cpop soap into certain plastic containers (some will melt) or most glass containers (they can burst/crack). So you have to choose your container carefully, and it will depend upon the type of soap you make.

Why don't you find the container you want to store the soap in then find something of equal size to actually make and mold the soap in so that when you unmold and cut it it fits your containers. I bet you could find a tin the size of PVC pipe.

I have never tried this, but in plastics, it's possible that polycarbonate might work. That's the stuff they use for unbreakable bar glasses. It is quite resistant to heat. I know this because I was in a bar in my youth that had those pint glasses and I was annoyed because they are not as nice as glass; the barman said with a smug grin, "they are indestructible". Not to a cigarette lighter they aren't. But the melting point is pretty high.

I would not use aluminum at all.

I second the use of pvc pipes for molds. They are easy to get, inexpensive, and much easier to mass produce. Besides, it comes in all sizes and you can get the guy at the store to cut it for you. Buy some caps and there you go. Oh, and the flexible, plastic cutting boards from the dollar store make great liners for the pipe molds.

lye interacts with the metals, which is why it must be stainless steel. I had a whisk that said it was stainless but after just a couple of stirs in the lye pot it turned very black at the joints and slightly up from the joints, and it left flakes in my lye. The drain got cleaned well that day, but I had to start a new lye pot to make my soap. I think my whisk was coated, not solid.
Had it been another metal completely, It may have produced harmful fumes, or some other nasty reaction. Not a good thing to experiment with!

Not to beat a dead horse, but I'm a tad confused. Are you talking about pouring the shaving soap (raw soap batter) directly into the container or putting a soap into the container once it's fully cured? The replies sounded like it was soap batter poured into the container. If you are going to take the fully cured soap and place into a container, you have more options. Good luck!

Linda, initial responses were for pouring the soap batter directly into the container because that was what the op wanted to know. But then we switched it up and discussed putting the cured soap into a container. You are right, many more options once the soap is cured for sure! And the pvc pipe comes in all different sizes, so easily matched to various containers. Also, BB has a neat column mold that is very inexpensive (I am thinking it is around 10 bucks or so) and it even comes with the liner and an end cap.
