I am interested in take a couple of courses from this school and their courses are relatively inexpensive. They are recognized by the NAHA. I was just wondering if anyone knows anything about this school. I really want to expand my knowledge but don't have a lot of money to do it and this school offers courses in my price range. This is their website, http://www.aromatherapyinstitute.com/programs.php. I am looking for anyone's opinion on what they think about this school. Thanks!

I am not familiar with this company. I took a 6 month long course in San Francisco some time ago. One thing I don't like is that they have an animal aromatherapy course. Most essential oils should not be used on animals. The first course teaches you some recipes and I would like to know if they use preservatives for things like toners, because I know some people will sell them.

Yeah, I wondered that too about the preservatives in the products they teach you to make. (Can't know till you actually take the class though.) I did see that they provided a class for Animal Aromatherapy. I know that most essential oils shouldn't be used on animals as well so I read through the curriculum for that class (wondering why they would teach something that is very controversial) and they do state that oils should not be used on cats and other animals. I know that there are also Vets out there that do use them wisely for certain types of animals though. My aunt takes her dogs to a very well known vet that practices holistic aromatherapy on dogs. So maybe they offer that course to be aimed more towards licensed vets to take? I did actually see a school that was approved through the NAHA that was a school for Animal Aromatherapy. That's not something I am interested in but it seems like the NAHA has approved it. Just saying maybe this school shouldn't look down on just because they offer an aromatherapy course regarding animals. They do state that their Clinical Master Aromatherapy Program is recognized as a Level II by the NAHA and The National Health Practitioners of Canada (not that I live in Canada but it does offer seem to offer them some credibility.) I did verify on the National Health Practitioners of Canada's website that their school is approved through them.

I did look to see if there were programs offered in my area and came up with nothing so my only option is online. I have looked at almost all the approved schools through the NAHA and some only offer on campus programs and then some offer online courses. There are a few schools where their programs are bit more easier on the pocket but this school has a basic certified aromatherapist program that is pretty cheap.

If you want to try it, go for it. As far as I know, there is no true national accreditation in the US, like there isn't one for herbs. In Europe, That's a different matter. You actually have to go to school for it, it's not cheap, the curriculum is not easy, but in the end, your certificate is nationally recognized. I'm not sure if you already have to be a medical professional in order to take the classes there. I know one of my nurse friends took it in England and a medical doctor who works with Aromatherapy in France. And yes, Aromatherapy is covered under insurance in France.

That's really cool. I kind of wish I lived in France. :D That's pretty sweet that insurance covers that. Yeah I know there is no real accreditation and that's why I'm not so keen on spending 2 grand on a certification program for this. I just want to expand my knowledge for more personal reasons.

Does anyone else maybe know of an online school that offers Aromatherapy Certification that isn't so hard on the pockets that I could research? It would greatly appreciated.

That's the least expensive that I have seen for an introduction course. This is a good school, but it's more expensive (though more thorough) http://www.pacificinstituteofaromathera ... seskey.htm

It seems like a really good, thorough program and it's only a tad more expensive. A lot of the other schools I have looked at are over a thousand and closer to two thousand. So this is very reasonable.

I am not sure about the site you asked about, but the price looks good. As for the preservative issue, many naturalist disagree about the use of chemical preservatives. Whether or not the class you take teaches you to add a preservative, ultimately it is you that has to read, study, investigate (and I mean medical studies and journals, not pop culture books that just repeat bad information and call it truth) and then decide for yourself what you need to do. IF you want to be completely natural then you will also need to invest a lot of money in lab tests and make extra sure your liability insurance is up to date. I say that rather tongue in cheek, but it is also very true. Still, I know those that do put short shelf lives on their products, tell clients to refrigerate and add a ton of antioxidants and call their stuff "naturally preserved. " Since even the scientists disagree about the efficacy of some EO's in regards to product preservation, we all can disagree too. I am not saying what I believe, I am simply saying that you can take a class that is perfectly good in all respects, and still have them not advocate a chemical preservative in an aqueous toner. That is not the stick by which I'd judge.

I also would not judge on the fact that they offer an animal aromatherapy class. There are many Naturopathy Vets that utilize Bach treatments, EO therapy, various massage and even acupuncture treatments. Robert Tisserand and others of his level of expertise have stated/shown that there is no danger in using such treatments on dogs and cats (although there are other animals that cannot tolerate them, such as birds) as long as you know what you are doing. As far as general use in your home, he also states/shows that aromatherapy is not a danger to your cats or dogs as some suggest. Since I was under the misapprehension that cats were potentially in danger if one used aromatherapy in the home, I found his website articles on this subject quite interesting, as well as a similar discussion on a panel between Tisserand and several other scholars and scientists. Very interesting indeed!

Whatever you decide, enjoy and remember that nothing anyone says is gospel. If you aren't sure or disagree, research it yourself and see where that leads you!

http://www.heartofherbs.com/ this is one I would look at. Demetria Clark is very well respected. Also consider Jeanne Rose at jeannerose.net

Bastyr University has started a certification program for Essential Oils & Aromatherapy. You take about ten 3-day courses over the period of a year or two to get your certification.

I've started the program. It's amazing. Brush up on your organic chemistry. I found myself trying to remember years of chemistry from way too long ago.

As far as I know, however, there's no distance learning. So it would require travel to the campus... And the courses aren't cheap. Probably not an option for many, but I thought I'd mention it since Bastyr is widely-recognized for it's research work.
