Teach Soap

So, I'm making a hand balm with bison tallow and kuikui nut oil.

Can I just use the phrase "bison tallow" on the label, or do I have to use the latin name for the American bison?

I really hope not, because the latin name for the American Bison is (and no, I am not making this up) "bison bison".

So if I have to use the latinate name for the creature, my label would read, in part "Bison (bison bison) tallow".

I'm afraid my customers would think I'd been whacked hard in the head while I was making my labels.

As long as its just soap, and you aren't making cosmetic claims, you don't need to include ingredients at all. So if you do, no Latin needed!

For cosmetics, you use the INCI name, which is not always the latin name. Would bison be considered beef? If so, then you'd just list it as tallow.

Genny, I decided just to list it as bison tallow. I use "beef tallow" for the stuff that actually comes from cows.

I list my ingredients on everything. If a potential customer comes along with an allergy to something or other, I want them to be able to look at my stuff and determine if there is an ingredient that may be problematic for them. Lots of folks are allergic to odd stuff, but if I label everything, they can make an informed decision.

I agree with you on the labeling. For example, I'm allergic to pork. That means when I want pie I have to ask if they make their crust with lard because lard is pig fat. Pigs (for those of you who don't know) are pork. OK, so I really had to explain it to someone that, no, I could not have ham because ham is pork. (They insisted it was white beef).

I don't know if I could use soap with lard in it since your skin absorbs stuff, so I don't take the chance.

Labeling is important to me. I know I won't buy something without an ingredient list. That being said, I do know I've forgotten to list pumice on my ingredients label for my Gardener's Pumice Soap. I am not changing the ingredients label since the front label does state "Gardener's Pumice Soap". Please let my customers be smart enough to know there is pumice in pumice soap!

Obviously, I had no clue on it. Thanks for the input! When a doctor tells you don't consume pork again or it may kill you the next time . . . well, gee, I haven't had pork in 34 years!
