Teach Soap

I am sure I am not the first and could probably find my answer if I spent some more time - however time I do not have today. Snowing like crazy and have to get a head start on errands and getting a child off an airplane. So here is the issue - I measured my lye at 3.70 instead of 3.07 - dislexia or what? is this way to much of a lye mistake. I traced well, poured well, and is setting nicely. But I thought I better ask the wonderful soapers where I get all of my questions answered. Love the board and love it when others ask questions I need answered.

I think it all depends on to what percent you superfatted. Once you know that, you can figure out what percent your soap is really superfatted to with this extra lye. I all honesty if it were mine, as long as there aren't any visible lye pockets at the end of the cure, I'd use it.

^^^Yeah, but it would have had to have been HUGELY superfatted though, kwim? I've had recipies where not even a 1/4 oz bump brought it too close to zero for my liking...

(what can I say? I'm cautious!)

Have you taken your actual oils and the new lye measurement thru a calculator? That will tell you for sure...

I calculated with all oils including those added at trace and it brought me above 3.6 - I removed it from the mold and see no pockets and the oils are not seperating. Is this a good sign?

Wet your finger, put it on the soap, then put your finger on your tongue. Does it zap?

I'm a lot like Vinca - very conservative! I am particular about my ingredients to the exact ounce or gram. I believe that when lye is involved, you can never be too cautious.

Maybe some would consider it boring, but I use well-established recipes and follow them to the letter. As a result, I have never seized a batch and have made dozens and dozens of very beautiful soaps.

BB sells PH strips that are handy to use. Even after 2 years of C/P soaping, I still test every batch.
