If a recipe calls for Dimethicone as an option, may I use Cyclomethicone as a replacement?

Thanks for the quick reply. I had a recipe for some after shave lotion. The recipe also calls for a lot of very expensive anti aging ingredients. Do you add any anti-aging ingredients to your lotions?

Cyclo and Dim are in the same family - they are both silicones - they are water-repellent film formers. In an after shave lotion the purpose would be to create an occlusive film to prevent water loss. Cyclo is not a good choice for that since it is a transient conditioner - it evaporates rapidly into the air.

You're welcome. Cyclomethicone works great in hair conditioners, by the way, giving superb detangling. About 1 to 1.5% usage.
Oh, BTW - in an aftershave I'd probably like to put some aloe vera and calendula extracts, to counter inflammation and soothe.

For lotion, you can use hydrolized silk.

Yes, hydrolysed silk would work fine. For a silky feeling using an emollient, you can try kpnangan butter. Sometimes called 'golden shea'. Unfortunately it can be a bit hard to obtain. It imparts a lovely 'dry' silky feel to the skin. I much prefer it to shea but I hesitate to specify it as an ingredient and I certainly would never soap with it, just because it is hard to guarantee having it in stock. The original ingredient that you noted, the dimethicone petrolatum (comes as a powder, is incorporated into the oil phase, typically use 0.2 - 0.5%) imparts a dry, silky feel.
