Hi.
I've been meaning to make a basic soap with the trinity oils (olive, coconut and palm).
I've found very different oil combinations. Some people add more olive than palm, others more palm than olive, others use equal amounts of each oil.
My question is, which combination is better?
I know soap making is a personal thing, what's good to some is bad for others.
But I'd love to know your input on this since you guys have more experience than me.
Does adding more of one oil really make a marked difference when you use the soap?

I've used 30,30,30 and it makes a nice soap. From that beginning I build all of my recipes adding other exotics for different effects.

There is no hard and fast rule. I use olive, coconut & palm kernel.

For feel I generally cut down the coconut, for conditioning I up the olive and then just fool around and any where from 5 to 20 percent exotics, like monoi' tiki tahiti, kukui nut, avocado, mac nut, babassu, jojoba, hemp, shea those type of oils and butters.

spelling edit

I'm still new to soap making.

But what I would do, is I have my base recipe. Which I use 50/50 for hard and soft oils.

so as an example..

If my base recipe was 1 lb coconut oil, and 1 lb olive oil

I would do something like this...

8 ounces coconut
6 ounces palm kernel
2 ounces palm oil

6 ounces olive oil
3 ounces avocado oil
3 ounces jojoba oil
2 ounces castor oil
2 ounces sweet almond oil

It really depends on what you like, and how hard you want your bar of soap I guess..
I like to consult soap calc.

I have all of the above except tiki tahiti. Is that coconut based, or is it something completely different? How does it differ from Tiare Monoi?[/quote]

It is Tiare fragranced Monoi' Tiki Tahiti, yes coconut oil~!

Thanks!
I did a co-op on Tiare Monoi last year. It's a nice oil.

thanks for the replies.

@ mella and kat393: thanks for the tips on tweaking the formula.

@soapbuddy: so there is no difference when using the soaps? If I made one with a higher olive oil %, another with a higher palm % and another with the same amount of oils, when using them, the 3 soaps would feel the same?
