Teach Soap

My question got lost in the salt bar thread so here goes:

I'm thinking of making 100% coconut bars for laundry detergent. I read in the other thread the bars have to be cut quickly or they will be too hard.

Is this only for coconut salt bars or all 100% coconut bars?

Also, for those that make laundry detergent, do you feel the Fels naptha cleans better or coconut? I'm willing to try either.

100% coconut bars with 0% superfat are great for laundry and yes, you need to cut them as soon as possible because they can get really hard! I try to cut mine while they are still warm.

Thank you! I never saw that in anything I had read, but I did see it on the salt bar thread. So glad my mind put two and two together.

Have you ever tried the fels naptha bars instead?

I wanted to ask if there is a difference between lard an coconut. I've seen lard soap for laundry previously and now I'm seeing coconut. What are pros and cons of each?

Lard works well for laundry soap if you don't mind animal based recipe. I can smell it in the final product, so I use coconut.

I've used both and they each work. Lard is usually less expensive than coconut oil. It does smell different, but I don't notice it once the clothes are laundered. You could always scent your soap if it bothered you. Most of the time I use 50% lard/50% coconut.
