Teach Soap

So my brain keeps drawing a blank.... with math of all things!!! If I know how many ounces my mold will hold how do I calculate the amount of oils I'll need? I've done the calculation aroud a million times, but can't remember how today!

Are you looking for the mold volume using the dimensions of the mold?

you did length x width x height and then multiplied that number by .39?

I picked up a rule of thumb from a book (Idiot's Guide?):

11 oz of oils per lb (16 oz) - consider the other 5 oz to be water and lye. Used this for all my beginning batches, then calculated the actual volume of the soap made with that guideline.

Alternatively, couldn't you take the percentage of water against the oils and figure from that?

So Hestey, does this mean instead of "Monkey Farts" soap, you are now making "Brain Farts" soap???? OK, so it's a bad joke. I wish I could help you with your math, but I did mine by trial and error to find out 122 ounces of oils was perfect for my molds.

I'm enjoying my Christmas gift from you and Sara is beyond thrilled with her Hello Kitty soaps! She was bragging to the little girls at child care about it.
