Teach Soap

How come every book you read tells you something different.....when pouring into the mold what's wrong with scraping the sides? I think I'm reading to much. Please enlighten me wonderful soap people. Many thanks. Hope everyone enjoyed this beautiful time of year!

I get everything out of my pot with a spatula.

I scrape the sides of my bowls with a spatula as well...why waste those wonderful oils and butters?

The Soapmaker's companion tells you not to, in case the batter on the edges wasn't mixed well enough. Makes no sense to me, since even hand stirring is sufficient to get all of it.

I've only ever seen and done the following: Mix lye-water and oils. Stir or stick-blend, scraping the sides often to make sure the entire potful is a homogenous mixture. Repeat until your arm falls off or your blender's motor burns right out. Pour. In a case like that, of course you can scrape the sides. It's safe.

The thing is, if you aren't doing that, no, you shouldn't scrape the sides.

I agree with Ipstenit. Years ago when we only hand stirred, we learnt not to scrape the sides, but these days I always scrape the sides into the batch while mixing it, even if I hand stirred and know what I know now, I would scrape the sides in and mix, scrape the sides in and mix

I most definitely scrape the sides of my pot, my pitchers that I mix soap into colorant, etc. Why waste it? Also, why have to turn around and clean it out?

Definitely SCRAPE !

Oh, and in answer to your other question, "Why does every book tell you something different?" Well, how else could they sell you the book?

You know actually I agree with the don't scrap, sometimes.

When I use FO's that turn my soap brown or tan and I want them to stay white I use a Vanilla Stabillizer. I forgot to pull some white soap out of the pot one day to do a swirl affect on the top of my soap and so I just scrapped what was left on the sides of the pot onto the top. A few days later it started browning. I think it was because the soap on the sides of the pot didn't get much of the stabillizer. Lesson learned. lol
