I know many folks here don't like to demo soap making but my son's science teacher asked me to (knowing that it uses lye) so I agreed. I'm going to do much of the prep work at home (mixing lye, measuring oils, etc) so as to be safer and save time. Since none of the kids will actually be doing anything, I think it should be fine (they're teenagers).

Anyway I would like to find a simplified explanation of soap making chemistry so that the kids can understand what happens. Part of the goal of the demo is for the kids to see that science (specifically Chemistry) may seem rather abstract but that there are tangible real-life uses for it too.

Does anyone know of any good sites that explain this in not overly technical language?

Peggy

Here is one of Anne Marie's soapqueen videos that explain terms really well. She has a 4 part series on making cold process soap. You could review the videos for some notes.
