Now I have started thinking about changing up my hand cream recipe since I started thinking about switching out my hand cream bottles. Well just a little bit ago I was cleaning out my drawer in the bathroom and found some of my old Avon Silicone Glove hand cream/lotion. I use to love this stuff! Excellent for your hands plus when I used to get sick and my nose would get raw, sore, and flaky from blowing it or wiping it I actually use to wipe it on my nose and it would work wonders. So I looked up the ingredient list and am thinking about trying to recreate it with my own twist on it. Here are the ingredients...

-Water This one is a given
-Glyceryl Stearateused as a skin conditioning agent
-Cetyl Alcohol I'm assuming this is used for viscosity and for adding a velvety like feel to the lotion cause the lotion definitely has one.
-Dimethicone for slip and glide I would assume
-Mineral Oil
-Imidazolidinyl Ureaused as a portion of the preservative. is a formaldehyde releaser.
-Fragrancethe fragrance is very light in this cream and I like it.
-Sodium Laruyl SulfateI have only ever known this for foam and bubbles but in a lotion. I would think anyone with sensitive skin this would cause an irritation.
-Disodium EDTAread this this has anti oxidizing properites
-Methylparaben preservavtive

Not sure the exact percentages yet but figuring water, glyceryl stearate, cetyl alcohol, dimethicone, using a light, non greasy oil in place of the mineral oil, fragrance, and preservative would be a good place to start leaving out the mineral oil, imidazolidinyl urea, sls, and disodium edta. Thoughts?

It's the dimethicone and the mineral oil that gave it the occlusive properties.

I really want to stay away from mineral oil. Something comparable to replace it with?

Thanks Lisa! It will probably be a couple of weeks before I get a chance to get around to making it. Tuesdays are my thinking days. :) Where I brainstorm to come up with a ideas and try to create recipes to test in the future. I'm definitely going to be doing some more research today.

You could use broccoli seed oil for the mineral oil, but the scent is not pleasant at higher %.

Did you know that mineral oil is an inert substance and it's still used post surgery as an occlusive layer to help wounds heal in the US. I think it gets a bad name because of where it originally comes from. Lots of commercial lotions and creams still use it. Yeah it's cheap, but it works because it isn't absorbed by the skin.

After doing some more research and reading I think this is the recipe I will try in a couple weeks when I get my supplies.

Water:
65% water
2.3% honeyquat

Oil:
5% Lotionpro 165 (Glyceryl Stearate and PEG 100 Stearate Emulsifier)
5% Cetyl Alcohol
5% Dimethicone
8% Rice Bran Oil
7% Fractionated Coconut Oil
1% Jojoba Oil
1% Pomegranate Seed Oil

Cool Down:
.2% Germall Plus
.5% Fragrance

I'll start off with a very small batch and adjust from there.

I don't like mineral oil not because of where it comes from but because every time I have used it in the past I haven't liked the way it felt with it. The Avon lotion with it in it is excellent but any time I've used it my lotion just hasn't felt right. Otherwise I honestly have nothing against it.

Heather- I LOVE jojoba oil in my hand lotions. I agree that it is definitely a must have!
