Hi everyone. I have visited this site several times and decided to take the leap even though I am completely cyber illiterate. I am a 65 yr old from Michigan and have been raising my 12 yr old grandson since birth. Although he is an absolute joy to both my husband and I ,he poses us some special problems because he has autism and insulin dependent diabetes. This is why I have recently become interested in soap making. I like the idea of not introducing commercial cemicals into his already challanged life. So I started by making the ugliest batch of soap that anyone has ever seen. But lo and behold I discovered many things with this poor sickly looking soap... it worked great! He loved it, I loved it and it gave me great joy in doing it. Since then I've made several more batches and they get a little better looking each time. I may even have some that are okay for Christmas presents!

Welcome aboard! Glad you are here. You've taken on quite a challenge and God Bless you for being able to step up and do it. I am 55 and adopted a little girl. She's been with me since she is 4 months old. While it may not seem like much to many people, she has asthma and when she was a baby she would need up to 6 breathing treatments a night. She's had 3 surgeries and she's doing quite well. She seems to only be affected by the asthma during the spring and fall since having an adenoidectomy. My daughter is in 1st grade and her little "boyfriend" since kindergarten is high-functioning autistic.

Soaping is fun. Some batches are prettier than others. As long as you are enjoying yourself IT DOESN"T MATTER.

Again, welcome! Hope to hear from you regularly. Happy Holidays!

Jill

Welcome, codysnan!
I think it's wonderful that you are caring for your grandson. He is blessed to have you and your husband, and you are blessed to have him. :D

I totally agree with Jill - soap doesn't have to be pretty to work. As long as you are having fun making it, that's what counts.

Welcome codysnan! And God bless you for being there for your grandson. Is he a high functioning austistic? My daughter has an austism spectrum disorder called Aspergers. She is very high functioning and is a mild case but still can be quite challenging. She's taught me so much. Soaping has cathartic for me and my family LOVES it! Enjoy and feel free to ask any questions. We're here for you!

Welcome. So glad you are enjoying soaping and found us here. I have two boys. My 7 year old son has Asperger's a form of autism as well. My youngest has some delays and is being tested now as well. It is such a challenge and your grandson is so blended to have you.

Thank you all for your gracious welcoming messages. I have learned a lot from your posts and just printed off all of Soapbuddy's posts for new soapers.
In answer to all of your kind inquiries my grandson, Cody, is moderately functioning with good communication skills. We thank God every day for his gift to us. One of the manifistations of his autism is his hypersensitivity to smell, so being able to make him special unscented soap is a blessing .

Wow, having a sensitive sniffer can be a very big challenge. I'm hypersensitive to smells and know how hard it can be. It's wonderful that you can make him unscented soap! Let us know if there's anything we can help with.

I'm not hypersensitive to smells, but some of them give my an instant headache! That's the great thing about making your own soap - you can control exactly what goes in it. Welcome to the addiction!

For me it can be tough because I work with the public and sometimes you just want to tell them that the soap in the bathroom is free so PLEASE use it!
