I have a regular customer who requested a pure lilac fragrance, so I used the one from BB. I thought it smelled heavenly and just right, but she wants me to make a whole batch just for her with TWICE the fragrance! So since the FO's ARE oils, do I use less of one of my oils to compensate for the FO that I'm adding? I already used 2 oz FO to 60oz of oils in the batch, so I know if I double the FO without compensating somewhere, I'll be heading for trouble. Fortunately this FO didn't accelerate trace! This lady is doing our website, so I really want to keep her happy, although I probably won't want to sit next to her in church right after she showers! BTW, I use Anne Watsons Shea Butter Supreme recipe: 21 oz olive oil, 21 oz coconut oil and 18 oz shea butter. LOVE this recipe!

Check to make sure that doubling it will still be in the safe zone first! Then you can go ahead and do it, no compensation needed.

BrambleBerry has a fragrance calculator on their web site. Fragrances are not all used at the same amount and if you use too much it can be irritating. http://www.brambleberry.com/Pages/Fragr ... lator.aspx

I've always heard that, depending on the fragrance , you can use up to 1 ounce of fragrance oil per pound of soap.

3 ounces is 5% of 60oz of oils. So unless you know the max usage rate on the oil, I wouldn't risk going much higher on it.

If in doubt, email BB and ask was the IFRA max soap rate is for the Lilac.

I recently made a Honeydew scented soap for a friend's sister and she likes it a lot, but wished the scent was stronger. I explained that I used the FO at the max rate, but it's just a light scent. She was surprised to learn that you couldn't just dump scent in until it smelled strong enough.

It doesn't always matter. My husband always says to add more scent no matter how many times I've told him you can't add more than the maximum IFRA for the scent.

Soapbuddy, hubby doesn't care whether it's for us or for sale. To him, nothing has enough scent so I should add more. He's a smart man but for some reason he doesn't believe using a fo beyond it's max rate could be irritating. Someday I may make a small batch with too much fo just to prove the point.

Thanks everybody! I came up with the same thing Heather did, so if that amount of LILAC doesn't make this lady happy, she'll just have to go roll around in the lilac bushes come spring. I've always thought of lilac as a light, soft scent, but whatever floats your boat, especially if you're buying my soap!

I have BB's lilac too. My Sis in law says she wants more lilac but I told her it is lilacy enough already and I'm not adding more to it. Somehow they can't get enough of it. Just tell that lady that you will use the maximum allowable and it isn't safe with higher amounts. That's what I had to tell my SIL.

Would adding it to rebatch or hot process preserve the scent better?
