I want to make some sort of concoction if possible for my 1 year old baby girl and 6 year old big girl for their hair using Lavender EO. I am not sure where to go t get the information, to see if its even safe for children and babies hair, and what percentages I would have to use if it is safe. I was looking to make a simple sprayable oil with some fractionated coconut oil and scented with lavender EO. Thanks

Can I ask for what reason you will be using this? I used to use lots of lavender on my kids when they were little and now my daughter is allergic to it. :(

Hi soapbuddy! All 3 of my children have very curly hair that also drinks up whatever I put in it, I don't even know what to use. I heard that coconut oil was good for the hair, and I like the way that lavender smells on children so if I couldn't do the frac. oil, I was going to whip up some coco oil w/ some shea butter and some Lav EO if possible.

So is their hair dry and needs some extra moisture? Shea butter can be too heavy for most hair. With that said, I have heard that african american hair can tolerate some shea butter. Try either FCO or virgin coconut plain with no scent and see how their hair likes it first.

My father is black and my mother is Puerto Rican, so I have attached a pic of my oldest daughter and myself so you can see what type of hair I am dealing with. I use hair gel in my hair and have used it in their hair as well, although I probably shouldn't because of the chemicals. The hair of my other two children is almost identical, just a little bit more curly and the texture is a little bit more dry like. I heard Shea is good for the hair but if it's too heavy, I wouldn't want it to weigh down their hair. What do you think would be more beneficial, the FCO or the regular coco? I just want their hair not to be so dry, but not greasy either. Right now I put water and gel in their hair as using store bought hair grease is too heavy. I know the hair gel probably isn't the best solution for them.

What a wonderful photo of the both of you! I would try the fractionated coconut first as it's less greasy.

Thank you roywestfall, you should see my other 2 kids! lol
Ok soapbuddy, I will try that 1st. Where would I even find out about hair benefits from EO's especially involving children? Thank you for the good advice

For children you could use (properly diluted of course): Geranium, Mandarin, Rosewood, Sandalwood, Ylang Ylang, Lavender, Grapefruit, Orange (but watch out for sun sensitivity) and chamomile.

Sonya you have an adorable daughter,

I would not apply any EO for your one year old daughter.
Have you tried Avocado oil on hair? It is one of my best sold oils for hair care. Massage it into scalp and hair and leave it for at least a couple of hours before washing the hair. After you've repeated this procedure for a couple of months, you'll observe the effect.
What about preparing a moisturizing spray tonic? Have you ever tried it?
Glycerin (up to 10%)
Panthenol (up to 2%)
Nettle and birch extract (you can prepare an infusion yourself)
Silk protein (up to 2%)
Geranium Hydrosol or Rosewater (up to 30%)
Hydrolyzed wheat protein (up to 2%)
Water
(preservative and pH-regulator of course)

Or a hydrating milk? The feel is much better than that of an oil.

Thank you inspiration! I was trying to work with what I have but I never even thought about making a solution, will the nettle and birch be ok for children? I am definitely going to get my pennies together so I can work on a formulation using what you suggested. In the meantime I will get some avocado oil and also try the frac. coco hat soapbuddy spoke about! :)
