At a recent market where there were probably half a dozen soapmakers, there was one "all-natural" soapmaker selling maybe five different kinds of soap just thrown into large buckets for seven dollars a bar, shouting the whole time about how they "only use premium oils," but of course their ingredients weren't anywhere to be found as their soaps were unlabeled and their signs just showed scents etc. I thought they were very aggressive and rude, seemed to be implying that all other soapers at the market were imposters, and that was tacky. Maybe that's why I wouldn't make a good seller. :)

So I looked em up online, and here are the oils they use:

"oils of Organic Sunflower, Olive, Coconut, Organic, Sustainable Palm, Shea Butter and Castor Oils."

Would you consider any of these premium oils? I hate to be a negative nancy, but it doesn't seem all that impressive to me, especially not compared to any other soapers' recipes. Maybe she meant she doesn't use anything like lard or crisco or vegetable oil, I have no idea.

Any opinions?

Nope, nothing special there. Maybe if they use mowrah butter or something like that... Sounds like a marketing gimmick to me.

Doesn't look that special to me. I don't see how they can claim ALL natural since you need lye and that's lab made.

Some soap sellers just have no clue and they get away with it. Calling it "natural" is one thing, calling it "all natural" is very misleading. There are some handmade soaps out there that did get organic certification, but it's expensive and beyond most soapmakers. I looked into it at one point, but decided to pass.

I really dislike people like this. I saw three different people at three different events this weekend totally botching the homemade soap front. One guy was selling M&P and had NO CLUE what he was doing. Makes me very sad.

Maybe they call them "premium" 'cuz they don't know where to get good prices on their oils and are paying "premium" prices for them.

When I went into the local health food store to pick up some goats milk and oat flour I decided to scope out the competition and was appalled at some of the labeling. First off, there was a liquid "100% Castile" soap which contained three or four oils other than olive. Then there was a handmade soap claiming to "kill germs" because of the essential oils used. Then there were more examples of cosmetics claims than I could even begin to describe, saying a bar was conditioning or "ultra-moisturizing" when in reality all soap is drying because it must, by necessity, strip away oils to some extent to even BE soap. They're getting away with murder left and right.

In my opinion premium oils would be something a little more luxurious or even pricier, like jojoba etc. And I know what you mean about all the crazy claims, and also believe all-natural in soaps just isn't possible. I cringe every time I see it. So many soapmakers just betting on the consumer not knowing any better. And some of them are really snooty about it!

The general public that has no idea how to make soap is gullible. They believe what the seller tells them. Like the MP lady that claimed my soap had lye in it and hers doesn't, so hers was better.

You know I was wondering about the"all natural" claim. I was browsing the Internet looking at some of the soaps out there and I saw many claims of "all natural ingredients". Made me pause n wonder how they could do that :(
