Teach Soap

The orange (and lumps) are the sugars in the milk overheating and caramelising. If you want to use half water, half milk... mix your lye with the water, and add your milk to the oils.

Otherwise, freeze the milk and then use it as a half thawed / slushy version and pop the lye container in an ice bath to help keep it all cool. Patience is needed when making milk soaps to avoid overheating and colour changing.

Yes, but we all know that just because you can't see it, doesn't mean it's not growing in there. After all, unpreserved lotion shouldn't be touched after a week and that's when it's been religiously refrigerated. I'd hate to think of unsopanified milk in my soap sitting in a warm laundry. /gag

I just made a batch of Yogurt/Castile soap yesterday and found this thread about adding milk to soap recipes…I had a similar experience making this soap with my lye solution turning a orangey, yellow color with small pieces of yogurt curd floating on the top of the lye solution. My mixture was ½ & ½ water and yogurt. I stirred it for quite a while and slowly the curds started to melt into the solution. I finally got a small frother mixer that I have and mixed the lye solution until the curds were pretty well dissolved. I made this soap about a year and a half ago and didn’t remember this happening. I added my lye solution to my oils which were 75% OO and 25 CO. Using a stick blender I mixed and mixed my batter until everything was incorporated as you did Soapwitch. With no hard oils it took quite a while before it traced, but that was ok since my lye solution had that yogurt in it. My soap finally set up and it’s a really nice light white color. I added a little FO that doesn’t have vanilla in it, so it didn’t darken.
