I'm so sorry to hear the sad news about your grandfather, Heather. I'll be thinking about you.

So sorry Hestey. My Grandpa was the father I wish I'd had. We were very close. He died from complications two weeks after having a stroke at the age of 87. He has been watching me from the other side for 10 years now and when I need him most I know that he is there with me. Like Coolah said, I can feel him and you will too when the time comes that you can't hug your grandpa in person. Your grandpa is still here and I thought the idea of deciding together how he will reach you after he's gone was an amazing idea. Journaling is good, but in your current state of mind might not give the peace you will be looking for when you read it later looking for comfort. I spent some time gathering stories from my other relatives about my grandfather (before he died) as part of a family history project. Years later reading those stories about his childhood antics, dating my grandma and pictures of him with all of us grandkids as babies was very comforting. You don't know me, but if it helps just know that a stranger is praying for you and your family.

I've been keeping track of this thread and until now I didnt have the right words to express how I felt. YOu heather have been in my thoughts and prayers, and if I ciould ease your ache I would. But I cant so if you ever need anything I am here. Keep your head up and your heart open even though it's sad. hugs Melissa

Oh Heather, I wish I were there to give you a hug. Is grandpa in Canada? Are you able to go there to help care for him? Does he have hospice coming in? If not ask his doctor for a referral...they can help. Caring for someone you love that is dying is the hardest job you will ever be asked to do, but also the most rewarding and gratifing - just don't take it on all by yourself. I will pray for you and the family tonight! And don't worry if you cry from now until spring or even beyond that.... we all would.

There are no words by anyone to take your pain away. Love him now, but know he will always be with you in spirit. My Sister lost her 3 year battle with ovarian cancer 3 years ago. She passed 3 years and one week after my Mom. The pain and agony my Sister went through is a battle nobody should ever have to suffer. I'm sorry your Grandpa is having this battle. I am glad he has had the chance to live a long life. My Sister lost her battle at age 53.

My sincere empathy. It will not be an easy winter for you but I hope you cherish the time you have left with your Grandpa. His body may give out, but his spirit will remain with you. I truly believe this. My little girl is audio clairvoyant. She never met my Mom because my Mom passed 5 weeks before my daughter came home, but as a 3 year old my daughter described my Mom's favorite yellow flower (daffodils), that my Mom was sorry she didn't tell me about her boo boo, she misses me, and she was going home to sit at her "pooter." My then 3 year old could not have known any of this and it is proof to me that her spirit lives on. This, by the way, was incredibly accurate. My daughter even could go point out a picture of who was "talking" to her.

So you go in peace knowing he'll be okay. Eventually you will be too. Don't be too hard on yourself. Don't take on any more responsibilities or make any major decisions. Give yourself plenty of time to spend with your Grandpa while he still has time on earth.

Jillybean, that is amazing about your daughter. What a special gift and how wonderful that she can know your mom this way.

I'm sorry to hear about your Granddad, Heather! It is so hard to lose someone you love. Make the most of the time you have and spend time with him even if it is by phone! There will be plenty of time to grieve later. You'll be in my thoughts. *hugs*

Oh my God! My heart goes out to you and your family. Give him plenty of hugs and tell him frequently how much he means to you. Cherish the memories. He will live with you forever. You have a million hugs from me!

We spent a few hours visiting with them this last week. My Father (a doctor) has convinced Grandpa to go to an Oncologist and have the tumor looked at. He believes it can be shrunken with radiation and says it is NOT life threatening!!! My Uncle (also a doctor, but clearly not as good as my Daddy) was an idiot and told my Grandpa it was non-surgical and would kill him. It isn't the sort of tumor that you WOULD surgically remove! My Father was EXTREMELY pissed off at his brother for giving Grandpa false, and horrible, information. Dad even told Grandpa to go ahead and start writing another book!

I'm very relieved that cancer is unlikely to steal my Grandpa from me, on the other hand I'd like to wring my Uncle's neck!!!

Thank you all for your prayers and kind words. Your support is really helping me come to terms with the fact that, even if it isn't from cancer, my Grandpa won't be here forever. He will be 96 in December.

Can I help you wring your Uncle's neck?

I would like to read that book please! And, by the way, I plan to live to 105 in good health. May your Grandpa do that too! Please keep us posted.

I'm so glad for you and your Grandfather! You could always upload a video of you ringing your uncle's neck for those of us who can't be there.
