Okay, so way back when I started making soap I read not use glass so I never have but how come I always see Anne-Marie using glass in her soapqueen videos and in all her tutorials on her blog using glass and Pyrex bowls and measuring cups to make cp soap? I don't think I have read once in any of her blogs to not use glass. Even Alicia Grosso's The Everything Soapmaking Book (the newer addition that just came out this past January I believe) says to use heavy duty glass measuring cups and bowls. With so much different information out there I'm sure it gets confusing and honestly except for the post that I read a while back about not using glass the sticky for newbie soapers in this forum is the ONLY place online that I have ever read that says not to use glass. I'm not by any means saying that people saying using glass safe isn't true (because the reason why it's being said is because at one point someone had a problem with this) I'm just wondering why well known soapers like A-M and soap authors like Alicia Grosso use glass and say it's okay.

Yup - that and my NEW BOOK (I was so happy to get it :) ) mentions it too, Pyrex by name, and I SWEAR that post either A) didn't have that and it was added or B) I totally like a nerd missed it...but yeah...how come on the videos from Soap Queen I see glass? Just wondering...there is so very much out there that can be confusing...

I've had a Pyrex cup full of lye water shatter, so I only use plastic or stainless steel.

I shy away from glass for CP soap because I have heard stories about the lye etching the glass and shattering.

Plus, I'm too darn clumsy to feel relaxed with glass. Glass can get pretty slippery with oils, water, and soap all over the place. If I ever dropped it, I would risk spraying myself and everything in my kitchen with glass AND lye. It's bad enough to spill lye or soap, but even worse if there are shards of glass everywhere.

Having worked in a lab I just have this to say. If you melt pure NaOH (in a fume hood) in a stainless steel container, and then put a lab grade glass container into molten lye, it will eat the glass away to NOTHING! The only other substance I know of that eats glass like that is HF (strongest acid there is).
