I saw that someone mentioned that purchasing lye from a general store is not a good idea as it may contain metal? I've been buying sodium hydroxide from the hardware store - is this not safe? It says 100% sodium hydroxide and so far I haven't had any problems...has anyone had a bad experience from this? Is it more pure from a soap-makers supply store?

I've been buying Roebic (100% lye) for years and I have not had any problems.

edited to add:

I have no idea where my brain was when I posted this. I don't use Roebic, I use Rooto 100% sodium hydroxide

I buy most of my lye from Essential Depot in Sebring, FL. They have great prices on food grade lye.

If your lye says 100% Sodium Hydroxide (or Potassium Hydroxide), it's good to use. But do check that it says that. If it's only 99% pure, the remaining percent is going to cause problems, and may be severely toxic. (Not that lye itself isn't toxic, but at least it becomes beneficial once it reacts with the water and oils.)
