I decided to come at this problem from the basis of having a working conditioner formula rather than trying to modify a shampoo.
So far so good. Since cationic compounds are incompatible with soaps and anionics, I added two amphoteric surfactants and 1% Glucamate VLT and it has come out super nice. Loads of foam. Lovely feel. Leaves the hair looking great. But I have to wait and see if it separates over time like all the other experimental formulae.

Some people only use a hair conditioner to wash their hair. I learned that for a hair forum. Just a thought.

Yes I'm starting to see some separation going on. Not as bad as the last formula but there all right :x
Been checking the formula and the logical cause is either the virgin avocado oil or the jojoba oil. Of those two I suspect it is the avocado. I will omit it in the next test. It's only 0.5% too. The shampoo works great but unattractive products tend not to sell.

My last 2 in 1 is now a solid gelly glob on top of a water base. Grrrr  We'll get it yet! Or spend a butt load of money trying to get it right! :P

OK, more experiments this morning. I made the same formula but I omitted both the jojoba oil and the avocado oil. I used a men's aroma for this one, Uomo Blue from IFF, and it came out clear, very nice.
Then to the remainder I added 2.5% jojoba oil (quite a lot really) and blended at high speed. Now waiting to see if it separates.

What are you using as a "conditioning agent"? The recipe I have suggests honeyquat and glycerin as they condition and are humectants. It also suggests adding 2% cetac and 4% silicone. I did 2% cyclo-dimethicone and it turned out nice, no left over silicone on your hands etc. The 4% was just way too much (though she does suggest using water soluble silicone if possible).

Do you mind if I ask what two surfactants you are using? I was thinking of trying Coco betain and decyl polyglucoside in my next batch. The one with Coco betain and sulfosuccinate didn't separate, but I used too much PEG-150 to thicken it. It is kind of the texture of goo. I am bound and determined to make my husband a decent 2 in 1!

Actually the succinate one with honeyquat didn't separate at all. The one with plantapon cetac and honeyquat did. The polyglucoside is "non-ionic". Trying to bring chemistry back to my head for this, but its gone. And my text books are in Canada somewhere.

Seems succinate and plantapon are both suited to a non- 2 in 1. I shall have to remember that. Thanks  I appreciate the formula help!

You are doing better than I am at this point, I think. My most recent test just changed from clear to milky
I think I will try the Plantapon LG Sorb instead of the cocoamphoacetate.

That is what I used in my separated batch. But I think you're right that the cationic compounds caused that. It is actually unusable, there is a very firm layer on top of a watery looking layer. No amount of shaking can mix them. :?
