I found this on the Soap Queen's blog:

http://www.soapqueen.com/bath-and-body- ... strikes-2/

It's an old post, but a very graphic illustration of what can happen to creams/lotions without any preservatives.

For me this Soap Queen post was important too. Previously I thought that preservatives are BAD BAD BAD. But then while reading this I thought, what damn cunning creatures may be born in a product with no preservative at all. I don't want to carry it on my body ) So I started my research on safe preservatives/usage amounts etc.
I think if I sell this lotion - i will put a preservative in it. Cause if I am not always sure for myself - that I won't put my wet finger into lotion when using it, to be sure for other people to keep the rules would be silly.

I even put a preservative in my liquid soap that I sell, even though it's not required. I do it as a precaution because of the amount of water in the soap.

Doesn't even need to be a wet finger in lotion. Our hands are constantly inhabited by millions (at least) of microbes. These include bacteria, fungus, mold, viruses, and even some little multicellular mites. Yes, we have mites. Alllll over us. Billions of them (did I creep you out yet? LOL). The bacteria are there mostly to protect us, as a symbiotic relationship. They eat our dead skin and in return make the environment unfit for parasitic or infectious species. The fungus, mold, and viruses on our skin are generally from the air or surfaces we touch, 99.9% of the time they do not affect us, our biota (inhabitant bacteria) make our skin an unfriendly place for them. But we tend to spread them to other surfaces where they can thrive, like lotion.

Think of it this way; if 560,000 microbes fit on the head of a pin, how many fit on your finger that you're dipping into your lotion?

Carrie, would you be willing to make a small batch of her recipe, leave it sit out and see how long it takes to mold or grow? Then you could call or e-mail her and ask her to clarify. Or better yet get a jar that she made and do that test. Did she say where she gets her borax from that it is 'different'? I have added borax to my laundry soap. That came from walmart.
Or.... could you e-mail her the link to Ann Marie's video?
You know there may be nothing you can do about this situation, except pray about it.

It's about the layer of bacteria that covers... Everything. It seemed appropriate for the thread. :)

I had heard\read about this before. Also saw a program on public TV once about germs... they never seem to go extinct! So I figure someday the germs will win over all of us. As someone who works in the healthcare field and as a mother, one piece of advice...WASH YOUR HANDS! This is where our soaps come in handy (pun intended).
