Okay, so I attempted the rootbeer soap yesterday and I cut it today. I boiled/simmered it just like was suggested here. The other ingrediants I used were olive oil, coconut oil, lard, and lye. I did not add any extra scents or colors...I just wanted to see what would come out. On top of the soap is some milky white stuff and it looks like it has some kind of swirls. Looks a little like a rootbeer float actually. What do you think would cause this?

Here are some pics of it cut:

And a pic of the top:

Any ideas? Do you think it will be okay to use after it has cured? It did not have a visual gel like the goat's milk soap that I have used, but it did seem to heat up and stay heated up for a while.

Those pictures are too small to see any detail in, but I believe what you are describing is soda ash. There is nothing wrong with it, it just looks... rustic! It is still safe to use ashed soap!

Yep, like Hestey said, can't really see it.

So, did the rootbeer scent survive saponification?

I guess I resized them too small in photobucket.
Here is another try:

It has almost a caramel type/sweet smell so far...

The white on top is ash, nothing to worry about. The swirly patterns inside I've had happen too, I THINK they are from heat dispersal but I'm not 100% sure. I've had no issues with them either. Just make sure you zap test them to make sure they are safe!

It does look like ash, but I really like it for a rootbeer soap.

Looks like soda ash to me as well. That's just esthetic.
