Just wondering.....is there a difference in soaping properties between regular palm oil and hydrogenated palm oil? I use SoapCalc and they don't list hydrogenated palm specifically, so I've just been inputing regular palm to calculate the recipe. But I'm using the hydrogenated palm when I make the soap. Is this okay? It just dawned on me today that there might be slight differences between the two! :o

hydrogenated Palm is of little significance in soap making. It's mainly used in food industry as a cheap substitute for butter. By hydrogenation, you convert oleic acid to stearic acid which has less benefit as a skin care ingredient.
The sap. value is slightly different from Palm oil.
Sap. value of Oleic acid (present in Palm oil) is lower than stearic acid (present in Hydrogenated palm oil). Unfortunately I don't have the exact amounts in my memory and my handbook is in institute and I'm sitting at home in the kitchen now.

So hydrogenated palm is not really an equal/equivalent substitute for regular palm in soapmaking?

So if you have 2 bars that are identical except one has regular palm and one has the hydrogenated......can you really tell the difference????
Also, not sure about other lye calculators, but SoapCalc, BrambleBerry, and The Sage (MMS) all just have palm oil listed----not a separate entry for hydrogenated----so I figured there couldn't be that much of a difference between the two.

Good question! Have you been noticed a difference in your soap since switching to hydrogenated palm? I haven't yet and I too just use the SAP for palm oil for my calculations. Admittedly, I don't want to find a difference since I love not melting all my palm to make sure the stearic is evenly distributed. *sigh* more research...

My last 3 containers of palm were completely melted by the time I got them home and they haven't even started to solidify! :lol:
