I just cut a castile batch yesterday. Today when I looked in on it, I found these spots on only ONE bar. What's going on with this one bar? It doesn't have the appearance/texture of mold, it's just flat & white in these two areas. Input appreciated..... :?

Looks like ash. Does it wipe off?

Irena,

No, it's not wiping off unfortunately. It's like it's part of the bar. It didn't look like this when I cut it yesterday either, it's like it happened over night.

P.S. Pardon my newbieness, but ash spots can be any size? Not just small flakes?

Thanks! I knew you'd be the first to respond
:D

Try this; rinse off the bar under a running faucet. Does it come off? It's possible that it's heavy ash and could be deep. If that's the case, just leave it be and use them for yourself. Handmade soaps do get ash sometimes and people still sell them. That's only an esthetic issue and doesn't hurt the soap or the customer. :)

I've had soaps get these spots too, I think its a thin layer that has dried out. The soaps have worked fine, no zap, not any different on the skin either.

I put it under running water and rubbed it away but it took a minute or two to come off.

Sounds like it's the same as some of my soaps! Not sure why these dry spots happen.

Heather,

So strange, isn't it? I just think it's crazy that it only happened to one bar...darn chemistry!

I've had some of this too but was wondering if it could be related to overheating?

Not sure, it seems to happen during the cure. Mine showed no signs of these patches when I cut it. They just appeared later on.
