Teach Soap

I was reading the ingredients on a soap label and they are listed like this: coconut oil, palm oil, castor oil, cocoa butter, canola oil, palm kernel oil, distilled water, sodium hydroxide, fragrance

I was just curious what you think the superfat would be for a recipe like that...I use coconut oil at 20% and sf at 7%, and looking at this recipe I'm thinking it would make my skin itch (if the sf was 5%). Do you think the sf is higher than 7%?

You would have to ask the person/company who made the soap. There is no way of telling the SF from simply seeing the recipe.

ok never mind then. I've just never come across a recipe like this..used to seeing olive, palm, coconut, castor recipes, and not where coconut oil is listed first (except for the high CO with 20% sf)

If the coconut and palm are equal in weight, then perhaps they went alphabetical. I'm just not sure about that though because when I use four or more oils/butters in a recipe, the water and lye tend to be higher on the list by weight than at least some of the oils.

When listing ingredients on a soap label (for the U.S.) the ingredients do need to be listed in order of amounts used (largest percentage to smallest percentage). It doesn't look like they listed it that way though.

I agree with Genny. This label looks very strange to me. The order of ingredients should start with the most used to the least used. Something doesn't jive here I'm thinking.

I think it's entirely possible that whoever made the soap doesn't have a clue about how the ingredients should be listed on the label.

I guess I assumed it was on the ACTUAL label...it was online, so maybe when you list online you don't have to have them in order? It's from a reputable seller..so I guess when I read it, I just assumed it was also on the label!

as SeaShoreCrafts said, my water and lye are also higher on the list too. I'm all for experimenting though lol..will try to come up with a recipe using what I have (shea instead of CB, OO instead of canola, etc).
