Thanks PJ for that tutorial!!

Right now I'm re-evaluating my packaging. I just asked my wholesale customers to take a survey about many aspects of my business and one thing I learned is that my soaps are getting damaged and worn looking very quickly due to my loose plastic packaging. The soap smudges on the inside of the bag as soon as someone touches it.

This is really hurting my reorders, so I need to fix it!

I tried sarah-wrap and I like its clean smudge-proof look but would need a good, fast system. On a good week I ship 750 soaps, so it really needs to be efficient. I think the shrink wrapping is too time consuming, and my sticks would probably get in the way. PJ - do you think so?

I'm looking into custom boxes but they're pretty pricey. I'd need to buy 5000 of them to get the price around $1.00 each.

So I really need some advice! Any thoughts?

Hi Soapylove, My DD has been making soapsicles for 2 years now and she packages them in clear bags with a fold over easy peel and stick seal.
This bag is long enough and narrow enough for the entire pop, stick and all goes into the bag. The bag is more of a cellophane type plastic than regular type plastic.
I don't have any of her stuff here to show a pic.
She only makes about 300 per year so although they may smudge she does not ship any and this plastic seems ok to her.
I know she lays them in plastic bins in individual layers with thin sheets of flat styro board in between the layers, I think this is so the plastic does not get smudged?

I would think though for you and the amount you make and ship you really would need a time efficient packaging system. I would say DEFINATELY get the boxes.
So much of your time is spent making a lovely product and you don't want to see it all smudgey on the wrap.
Although it is a huge outlay of money to get the boxes, your product is worth it to protect it. It is always very difficult to justify spending money on packaging,
but packaging too can sell a product as well as protect it.

Of course they are just my humble opinions. :) I do hope you find a solution.

Maggie -

I use saran wrap at Otion for all of our soaps.

The "secret" is a heat gun - like a paint gun stripper that you buy at a hardware store - or an embossing rubber stamping heat gun.

If you heat shrink the saran wrap onto the soap, it stays tight against the soap and doesn't end up looking cloudy. In fact, it looks downright professional AND you can even smell the soap through it.

You might try that before investing into a full shrink wrap system. :D
