We were at a craft fair recently and there was a booth set up that had homemade soaps. I spoke to the owners a bit about their soaps and then browsed around. (Nice stuff!). On the way out of the booth area I noticed that one of their soaps was called "Lye Soap", which kinda confused me, since I know they did CP for all their soaps. I had the younger children with me (one of whom was NOT happy at the moment!), so didn't have a chance to go back and ask them what they meant by that label.
Could someone shed some light on this for me? If all their soaps were CP, why would just one be named "Lye Soap"?

It's most likely soap with 0% superfat, that our ancestors used for laundry. I have also seen it as grandma's old fashioned lye soap. It's also useful for poison ivy, but you can't make any medical claims.

Well, it's just a matter of technicality. When they say "lye soap" they mean "I didn't buy a pre-made soap base. melt it down, and add colorant and additives. I made this soap from scratch, mixing oils and lye, allowing the mixture to saponify, and that's how I got the finished product." Technically, the chemical compound of lye is no longer there. It's mixed with the oils to make soap. I personally try to stay away from the term, as it tends to confuse people and makes them too scared to use my products! :D Essentially, they used the cold or hot process method and not melt-and-pour! That has been my experience with people that label their products as lye soap.

In my area, lye soap means the stuff that grandma made that would take your hide off.

I use to make "lye" soap with my great grandmother back in the 60's. When I hear the term, I think of it as soap made with tallow or lard nothing added to it. Just plain old soap.
I know after taking a bath using it, made me look like someone who fell asleep at the beach on a sunny day!

Thank you for everyone's responses! Much appreciated :D
(Good idea to label it well....as I would not have thought of that!)
