I'm planning a lot of activity over the weekend because my shampoo ingredients just arrived. Nice to have plenty of polysorbate for a change. The D'Panthenol is so thick it's like glue. Not pourable. I got a litre of Jojoba oil and a litre of hydrolised keratin, which apparently is 'liquid hair' made from raw wool. So now I can finish off the formula for the clear shampoo. Also I found a source locally for a non-sulfate anionic surfactant so I'll be able to make a sulfate-free shampoo.

Good for you! Could you put the bottle of panthenol in a sink with hot/warm water so you can get it out of the bottle?

The panthenol is in a wide neck jar, I guess they packed it that way for a reason! I'll try that. I'll put the vitamin E jar in as well, it's got the same problem! I am going to have to start using my big refri now, because I have too many ingredients to store in the existing one. The keratin for example has to be stored at a specific temperature range. The plant extracts need to be as cold as possible too. I stock a lot of aloe concentrate but also calendula, nopal cactus, papaya, centella asiatica ... then there's the lipids.

I got a second refrigerator just for my soap and lotion supplies. All of that would never fit in my house fridge.

I had a small refri for all the lab stuff, which was ok until now, but the 5Kg slab of shea fills a lot of it, so now I will have to fire up the big one too. However I don't need it that cold - 10C will be fine - and I will open it rarely, so it shouldn't be too expensive to run.

I made a 600mL batch today that turned out great. I solved the pH versus viscosity problem. What was happening was that when I added enough citric to get the pH down to 5 (been reading Swift's blog, you see) I was off the right edge of the salt curve. I added more anionic, slowly, until I had the viscosity as desired, retested the pH and it was just over 5, so no problem. Made up 4 test bottles in different colours. Oh yes, BTW, BB's blackberry FO did increase the viscosity. Opposite to vanilla! I used 3% liquid keratin and 2% panthenol, 0.3% quaternium-60. This one should be great for dry, damaged hair. Will try it tomorrow!

Thanks. 8)
I ended up using 25% anionic and a total of 25% amphoteric out of 100% of the formula.

If I can sum up the problems of formulating a shampoo, it's that you have to think in three dimensions.
Imagine a tent supported by a pole and two laterals.
Ideally you want to use as much amphoteric as you can because that's refatting, 100% biodegradable, green, non irritant.
The problem is that it's the anionic that makes the foam.
Then, you've got to adjust the pH to 5 - 5.5, so you need to add citric acid. By the time you get to the required pH, the viscosity is way too low - you're off the rhs of the salt curve. The way to fix that is to increase the amount of anionic in the formula until you get the right viscosity. As you approach it, the addition of even tiny amounts of anionic makes dramatic changes.

It went like this:
Mixed the three amphoterics and the water, took it up to 70C, added the anionic, measured the pH: 8.5 (thick)
..added sufficient citric to move the pH to the required 5, (thin now)
..added, by small amounts, sufficient anionic to improve the viscosity.
..measure pH again. still about 5. OK.
..proceed with addition of other ingredients.

I used panthenol, hydrolized keratin, aloe vera, glycerine, quaternium-60, and BB's blackberry fragrance solubilized in Polysorbate-20. It smells lovely and fresh. This is a clear shampoo; the polysorbate did the job perfectly. I've given out a few samples to friends.
