Another question about lye...I was planning in storing the lye in the shed outside-would that be a problem considering how hot it gets here in Miami?

Yes, I used to live on the wet side of The Big Island (Hawaii Island) and I used to have to put "Stay dry" packettes in with my stored lye.

I picked up a gallon Rubbermaid pitcher from Meijer last week.

When I make my first few batches, they will be small- between one and two pounds.

Will the size of the pitcher affect anything? I seem to recall reading somewhere that a too-large container would have an adverse effect on the lye reacting with the water, or something.

If that's the case, what else should I use to mix the scary stuff in?

I sometimes use an empty/clean 5 Gal bucket. ( The thick kind the oils come in.)

I use an empty oils bucket. I figured the oils go in hot, so it could take the heat. I tried it in the sink first. So far so good.

I would not store liquid lye in a 5 Gal bucket for very long though, I just mix it up, let it cool for a few hours and then use it right away. ( I like to soap with cool lye.)

That would be too small for some of my batches - but it will work!
