I would like to add some oats and pumice to my goats milk soap but not sure when to add it. Also what other things can I add to the soap. I am very new to soap making.

Tanja have you watched the Soap Queen series of videos? They are an invaluable resource for the information you are after. If you watch the whole series you will not only find out the answers you will also learn a great deal about the process which will help you to make the best soaps that you can.

Yes. I would highly recommend starting with the soap queen YouTube video's. There is also the SoapyLove eZines / books which will also teach you. Those two are the queens of melt and pour.

Hi, Tanja. I don't add a whole lot of extra stuff to my melt and pour, but I do sometimes like to add a bit of ground oats, honey, or clay. I usually add stuff like oats when the soap has cooled some, like 115-120 degrees F. (Honey I may add sooner to make sure it gets warm and incorporated.) If you add your oats and pour your soap when it's too warm, the oats will sink to the bottom. If you want your oats suspended throughout, it's best to stir the oats in and pour when the soap is cooler and starting to thicken and feel tacky. If your soap gets too thick and gloppy, you can nuke it in the microwave in short (maybe 10-second) bursts until you get the consistency you like. Also keep in mind that smaller particles are easier to suspend than larger ones, so ground oats will suspend easier than whole oats.

Here are some threads from a while back about adding things to M&P:

The SoapQueen TV videos are a great place to start if you are new to soapmaking. I learned so much from them! :)

You can add some dry ingredients like oatmeal, poppy seeds, salt, clays, teas, coffee grounds, cornmeal.
But stay clear of using actual foods or food peelings.

I don't add a lot of stuff to my mp, either. I used to, when I was experimenting. But I found out that a lot of stuff didn't work and so now I like to keep it pretty simple.
