How can something be labeled natural if there is perservatives in it? If you buy any kind of scrubs or body products at Whole Foods they have perservatives. Which ones can be used (perservatives) and still be labeled natural?

Since the word "natural" has not been regulated, technically, any products can be called natural, even though they might have only one or two natural ingredients. There are no truly natural preservatives that would work for us homecrafters.

20% alcohol would help preserve a formula, but the problem with that is that it would make any product very drying.

The chemical group with makes an alcohol an alcohol is what is behind the skin drying properties. So even a so-called "heavy alcohol" would still be quite drying and undesirable in body products. The exception to the drying rule of the hydroxyl containing compounds is glycerin. It is the only non-carcinogenic (or suspected carcinogenic) alcohol that is moisturizing. [Hydroxyl is the bound -OH group which makes a compound an alcohol]
