Here is what is in crisco: "Ingredients: SOYBEAN OIL, FULLY HYDROGENATED PALM OIL, PARTIALLY HYDROGENATED PALM AND SOYBEAN OILS, MONO AND DIGLYCERIDES, TBHQ AND CITRIC ACID (ANTIOXIDANTS)." It was only cottonseed oil between 1911 and 2002. It is now the above formulation

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought TBHQ is an anti-foaming agent. So could that inhibit bubbles if used in larger amounts?

It does have anti-foaming properties and it also helps products retain fluid by stopping evaporation. After reading this I'm thinking crisco isn't so good for soap!

Hi folks! As a relatively newbie soapmaker, I've really enjoyed this thread!! A friend of mine was curious if using lard adds any sort of funky smell to the soap batter. Can any of you experienced crafters answer that question for me? I'm guessing it's been refined so the potential "animal" smell isn't there, but I honestly don't know.

Thanks in advance!!! :D

Doesn't add any smell at all. My oils end up smelling like coconut because I use virgin coconut oil, but even that smell disappears once the lye is in it. Even 100% lard soap doesn't have that "animal fat" smell.

I sit down with an excel spreadsheet and the SAP and make six recipes from the same ingredients using different percentages. i sometimes start with the goal of
making olive oil as the highest percentage in all the batches or start with a proven recipe and replace a similar oil with the new one. then i go crazy and try out variations. i usually make only 500 g batches when I do this because I want enough soap to test, give away, and store to evaluate how well it ages.
