I've been seeing some soaps where the outer 1/4" inch or so is one color and then the whole inside is another. Is there a special technique to create this? Or does it happen because of an FO or colorant? I think it looks really great. This is the only example I have. I think this one may be discoloring, but I've seen it with other colors, not just brown.

That one is due to the vanilla scent, eventually the entire bar will go dark!

Or it could be that they did an embed soap without the vanilla and poured another batch made with vanilla around it. Usually (at least in my experience with vanilla) any areas exposed to air will darkens at the same rate, not leave a lighter circle in the middle after it's cut. That's why I think it's an embed.

Yeah that looks like an embed to me. The cream colour looks more scrubby as well. They didn't add as many oats to the darker colour...

Here is my question: how quickly is she selling her soaps if the inside has not had time to 'convert'. Sometimes I will use a FO to get the brown color.... like for my bears. The longest they have taken to go brown was 2 weeks. Unless she does not cut this loaf until she sells a slice. And if some of us overlooked her fine print I would think that others are as well, and then they would expect the soap to look like the photo.... not very good buisness ethics IMO.

I agree, I only read it because I wanted to confirm that it was due to vanilla. At first I didn't even realize the text went down so far on the page! I wonder if she takes the pictures the day they are cut and uses those pictures in her Etsy? I don't know, I'd be iffy buying something like that knowing that it goes brown decently quickly when exposed to air! You guys have taught me well

As a customer, I am buying what the picture shows. If I then got a fully brown piece of soap, I would be asking for a refund!

Is it possible that they cured the whole loaf, then sliced it?

I wondered that, but the pictures I've seen of cured soap being cut it was pretty crumbly around the edges.

I do agree that the pictures should reflect rhe final product more. I understand color variations, but showing something that is that far off the actual shipped product needs a declaration at the very top.
I'm going to hijack this thread a little. She's selling the bar for $5.00, do you think that it's worth it to pay etsy 20 cents + 3.5% and paypal 3% to sell a five dollar item? She's netting less than 4.50 on each bar. Granted she doesn't seem to be using anything very expensive in her soap, i.e. eo's
