Teach Soap

I have always wondered what some of these hotel soaps are made out of.
They are very powdery, and don't appear to be the Cold Press or M&P soaps.
It's a very odd texture, which easily snaps in half with lots of powder residue.

Commercial made soap starts with oils and lye like any other soap, but at a 0% superfat. The difference is that they press it into flakes with a heavy roller. Sometimes the shredding/flaking is done up to three times (triple milled) to get a fine powder that is pressed into tiny flakes. The last process is adding a superfatting oil and any fragrance or color. Then this new "dough" is sent through an extruder. The long, thick tubes of soap that come out are then cut into lengths or are pressed into a die mold to get a really smooth and hard soap.

Thanks for the response. They remind me of candy that's pressed powder with a ton of pressure to form a solid shape. I kind of figured it would be along those lines or processing. Would love to see it done.

I agree, that was great. Makes you appreciate what we do with our little batches...

Very cool! What I thought was interesting is that there was no cure time. The soap was packaged immediately after shaping. I know that much of the water was lost through the milling process, but I would have assumed there would still be a cure time.
