So, I'm really intrigued by this Lard idea in my soap. Before I started really learning CP, I was only ever really exposed to Glycerin and Goat's Milk soaps. Goat's milk is by far my favourite! I love how it leaves me skin, and the fact I don't have to moisturise when I use it. I have very sensitive skin and moisturizing is not always my friend.

I'm wondering how a bar with Lard AND Goat's Milk would go though? Is there such a thing as too much conditioning in a soap? I was thinking of using the Lard to replace my Olive Oil... :?:

You can try a lard bar with goat's milk. Goat's milk has natural sugars, so that would up your bubblage factor.

Ooooh, bubblage!!! :D

I was thinking of trying Lard, Goat's Milk and Honey. Having a play with the calculator at the moment. Not sure I'm quite at the stage to attempt Milk soaps yet, but Goat's Milk and Honey is something I would like to try eventually I think.

I never listen to my own advice of taking it slow lol, it's a major weekness. When I jump into something, it's with both feet firmly side by side! I had goat's milk here (picked it up in the Supermarket the other day), I had the lard, I had the honey. I think I now have alien brains! :o :oops:

I have read a few times that it's 1 tablespoon of honey to 1 pound of soap mixture? Converting my 1000 grams over, it worked out to be just over 2 tablespoons, so I added just the two. But now I can't seem to get trace. :cry:

For a kilo of soap 1 tablespoon should be enough, 2 is still relatively safe. Lard will slow down trace. Are you using a stick blender? What temp is it?

This is what the mixture looked like after 15 minutes of stick blending. NOTHING was happening so I poured it into the mold so I could clean out the pot and get ready for another attempt. My gut feeling told me something had gone wrong...

My recipe was:

1 Lard 35% 245g
2 Castor Oil 10 % 70g
3 Coconut Oil, 76 deg 20% 140g
4 Avocado Oil 10% 70g
5 Palm Oil 25% 175g

Goat's Milk 266g
Lye 98.173g

Stick Blending and temp around 80 degrees celcius

That's my alien brains! Now we're sisters. :lol: I would get rid of that batch.
I would use minimum water required to dissolve the lye, then add the rest as milk AFTER the lye water has cooled off. Your milk overheated and separated.

Haha, yay! I think... :lol:

Reading your post, I instantly know what I did wrong. I didn't use Water... I poured the lye straight into the milk. When I used the calculator here http://www.soapcalc.net/calc/SoapCalcWP.asp, it just gave me a water amount. So I just swapped it straight over for the same amount of milk. I noticed it turned yellow when I was mixing the lye in, but it was still 'liquidity' so to speak.

Ok, so how do I work out how much water to use and how much milk to substitute? :?

Oh, and how do I get rid of this batch safely? Over here the lye is in the 'drain cleaning' area lol, but I can't imagine all that oil would be good for the drains? :?

Making a lye solution with milk.

Follow the general directions for Making Lye including all of the safety guidelines.
Start with about 1/3 of your liquid in liquid form and the other 2/3 in slushy or frozen chunks form.
Add the liquid 1/3 to your pitcher.
Place your lye pitcher into the sink. Fill your sink with enough cold water and ice to almost meet the level of the milk in the pitcher. If you add too much water, your pitcher will start to float and may tip over. As you add more milk and the lye to the pitcher, you can add a bit more water and ice to the sink.
SLOWLY add a bit of the lye to the milk. As it starts to dissolve, it will start to heat up. Stir the solution gently.
Wait.
Wait a bit more.
Wait a bit more until the solution cools back down a bit. You don't want the solution to get much more than about 100 degrees.
Add a bit more lye. Stir. Wait.
Repeat, adding a bit more lye into the solution at a time, but never enough to cause the liquid to heat up considerably. As the liquid starts to heat up, add a bit of the slushy or frozen milk to the pitcher to help cool it down. (Be careful of splashing the lye solution.)
When you're done adding all of the lye, add the remaining slushy or frozen milk and stir until everything is melted and blended.
Take notes!
The solution will inevitably turn a golden amber as it mixes and heats up. But that's ok. It will impart that color to the soap.
NOTE--Don't leave your lye pitcher unattended while it's cooling in the sink if there is any chance of a pet, child or spouse inadvertently tipping it over or, worse yet, getting into it.

Past that, the procedure works just the same as mixing lye with plain water. Be safe. Enjoy the experimentation!

I don't do the add a bit then wait part. I have too many soaps to make and that would take too long. Go to the Sage calculator and input your recipe. You can do it there in grams if you like. After you hit calculate it should give you a water range. Use the lowest amount to mix your water and lye, then use the rest as milk AFTER the lye water cools off..

Okie dokie, so that one tells me: 250 to 375 milliliters of liquid

So I would use 250 to dilute the Lye - let it cool (go cold? Or just cool?) then add 125g of milk?
