My dtr has requested soap to make her own powdered laundry soap. So after reading all of the threads on this forum I still have one question. I made a 0% superfat half coconut, half tallow soap. I waited 3 days and then grated it (using the 4 dollar salad shooter I just scored at the thrift store). I am wanting to get it to a powder consistancey, so do I need to let it dry some more before putting it thru a blender. My dtr will be doing the blending with borax and washing soda. Or would it be best to put it in the blender with the borax and washing soda to mix it? Please help. Thanks!

You should porbably let it dry some more so that it will grind up into powder more easily. If it's too fresh it may clump together rather than go to powder. You don't need to mix it with the borax & washing soda.

She may find that depending on her water, a liquid laundry soap will be better. The powdered doesn't do as well in my water.

Linda, I had a similar thought but she read a blog that powder was the way to go... so hey if she wants to try it I'm game. I will leave my shreads to dry a little and then put in the blender. Since they are already shredded I am hoping it will dry faster than leaving it in bar form. What I saw on the blog she referred me to, the lady bought a bar of goats milk soap and gound that. By that I am thinking the soap would have been fully cured. I wanted the no superfat and could not see using goats milk in the wash so just used filtered water.

You can add it when you make your soap if you want. I don't tho because I prefer unscented laundry soap.

I heard that the fragrance does not come thru into your clothing. The soap is gone with the rinse cycle. There was someone on the forum that recommended putting a few drops in some vingar in the rinse cycle. I am going to have my drt try that... so I left my soap unscented. I used the tallow because I have decided I do not like it as well as the lard in my soaps.
So Linda, how long do you cure your soap before grinding?

My kind of lady - a thrift store gem hunter! I happen to own two blenders... what can I say, my husband likes to shop. Right now I am watching our thrift stores for a stand mixer... the rummage sales are slowing down due to the weather.
My shreds are starting to dry out. Think I will give it a week, try it and if necessary let it dry some more. We will be going to see her the week of Thanksgiving so I can give it some time.

I make a 100% lard batch with 0% superfat and do it the HP way. I am extremely impatient. Not a good trait to have in soapmaking but I'm working on it! After I shred my bars I add it to my food processor (got a cheap one at wallyworld) with some baking soda. That helps to prevent clumping and powders it up nice. Plus the baking soda helps if you have hard water. I add that mix to borax and washing soda. I do add a f/o that has a clean scent but it never survives the heat from the dryer. I do smell it when I let something air dry but not much. My loads are always large loads so I add 3 tbls. to mine and my clothes are extremely fresh and clean smelling. They come out super soft and I don't use vinegar in my rinse cycle.

Thanks for the tip Kelly! For this batch I do have some time.... but think I will try this to see if it works for me. And I really do not know if they have hard water since they live so far from me. Once I get there it has never been the topic of choice   :!:

After reading this thread, I have a question. Isn't it dangerous to superfat 0%?
