So far my "testers" (friends and family) are in love with my soaps - even what I consider the 'blah' newbie ones - which makes me very happy

I hear ya regarding the family/friends thing. There is a degree of separation with some of my "testers" and they've been super honest with me anyway if there is a property in a soap they don't care for or whatever. It's the best I can do right now in terms of subjectivity

That said I think I might start handing out little feedback cards with my soaps or keep an online survey going (people are generally very honest with online surveys).

You're gonna convince me to try lard aren't you Linda? LOL.

Count me in on that revival! I still love my lard soaps. I am currently using a tallow base soap (walmart shortening) and do not like the quality as well as my lard soaps. I will try another soap with the shortening to make sure it was not something with the color or fragrance.
I only have one friend that does not want the lard in the soap, but she is also my only vegetarian friend!

I had heard tallow was the be all to end all to make soap with but was disappointed in it after using lard. I also like working with the tallow a lot less. The texture is yucky to me. At fist I hated palm too until I tried the bars I made with it. Alone it is nothing to brag about but in a small percentage with the lard it seems to make the bar a bit more smooth.

You do realize that Crisco has palm in it? If you use actual Crisco that is. Different brands of shortening use different things so you have to read the label. Since they are a blend of different fats it can make labeling them a nightmare if you want/need to label them cosmetic style bcse of claims like moisturizing.

I just started using palm oil recently...the bars are great but it really depends on your customers. Although if you didnt want to use palm, try olive oil and avocado - takes a long time to cure but its worth it...wonderful soap.(a bit more pricey) I do 50/50 along with some clays for color. Mine all sold out and I wasnt expecting it so now I am curing...I wait about 8 months on these. You'll love them
