I have another question :0)

A couple of times now, I'd take a bar of soap, work up a good lather, rinse, and when I dried my hands, there's a chalky residue between my fingers. I was wondering if it's from the hard water I have. But, I've never had this happen before when I was living in another town (I moved a few months ago) and had hard water there too. My hands don't itch..just wondering what's going on? Anyone else experience this?

I live in hard water area also. It's really hard to lather with hard water and everything I wash had white residue, so I eventually got water softener in my garage filtering all water going into my house. Try a little test, wash your hand with distilled water with soap and see if there's any residue then you will know if it is the water.

tried it today with distilled water and didn't have any white residue on my hands. Maybe I found the answer...but will try again tomorrow using the regular water just to make sure!

Try adding a small amount of EDTA to your CP soap. That should help with the hard water issue. Jen at lotioncrafter.com carries it.

Tetrasodium EDTA is a chelating additive. Use 0.5% EDTA of the gross batch weight . Put it in at emulsion, before trace.

I think it's the Tetrasodium EDTA. I went to their site and picked this sentence out of the description..."Tetrasodium EDTA is recommended for alkaline products, like most handcrafted soap (and can also be used in creams and lotions)"...here is the link for more info http://www.lotioncrafter.com/tetrasodium-edta.html

I have seen this ingredient listed before in commercial soaps...my husband brought home a bar of hunter's soap he purchased from Cabela's last fall and it had that in it. The soap smelled awful too, by the way lol...I threw it out and told him I will make him hunter's soap for next year!

ok, back on topic..thanks soapbuddy, I bookmarked that site and will keep it in mind! :)

What a great thread, I'm sorry I didn't see it earlier. I have hard water, so I'm so used to it, but I had a lady at church ask me if I could make a soap she could use with her "horribly hard water"
I told her I'd have to do some research on that.
Thanks for sharing :)

Oh, Methree, if you don't mind me asking, what do you use in your "hunter's soap"? I've been trying to come up with something that kills the "human" scent, but attracks the game as well. I'm mainly using Anise EO. Just curious, I'm eager to get a good batch going as the season will be here in a few months ;)
Some of that gunk they sell at Cabela's and Bass Pro gives me a head ache!

Hi FarmScapeGoods! I haven't made hunter's soap yet and I mostly see anise eo being used, but I'm going to use a different fragrance. I haven't placed an order yet..I probably should because you're right, it's just a few months away! I can't find my list of the FOs I had written down for this, but "Dirt" was one of them and I think Cedarwood. Or maybe Grass? I will have to search for it.

I wonder about grass....

I was going to try dirt with a teensy bit of oakmoss, I wash our gear with dirt scented uv killer. I've been trying to find something of a true acorn, but haven't had much luck. I'll let ya know if I find anything good ;)

So is it any scent that can be used to mask a scent for hunting? I just stumbled on a hunting forum (very interesting, by the way) and it looks like a few of the hunters recommended unscented soaps and deodorant. Why is anise the recommended scent? This just really piqued my curiosity.

Thanks all,
Erin
