You need to boil off ALL the alcohol, so the soap doesn't seize. The wine also has to be very very cold. Use a tall plastic container that you put into the sink to add the lye to the wine. It will not add any scent or color to your soap.

I would like to add, when adding the lye to the water, do it slowly, just a little at a time and stir stir stir, or it will turn into a volcano! If you're using red wine, don't be alarmed when the lye water turns green, it'll go back to red :)
Also, my red wine soap definitely comes out red but the white wine soap doesn't change color.

Thanks, I would not have boiled the wine first, read did not have too! Thanks Soapbuddy, I have also read that if using dark red wine it will give a pale pink color? I will post pics as I am going to try with some red Merlot this Tuesday.

Do you guys think the wine can be either added after with a 50% water discount? or maybe, 50% water and 50% wine and than mix with the lye, or not really worth the risk of trying either of those ways?

Sorry for the late reply ladies, I took a bath, drank some wine and went to bed early

I use either Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot (the cheap stuff, or stuff too old to drink) I boil it for about 15 minutes and then add water to reach the amount of liquid needed. My wine comes out kind of a rose (pronounced rosay, no accent mark on my computer) color.

I can't for the life of me figure out how to post pics here, but my etsy shop has photos. http://www.etsy.com/shop/dirtygirlsoapcompany
it looks a bit brown in the photo, but it's more dark pink in real life :)

Best of luck Selena!

ETA- I use as much wine as the recipe calls for, but after I boil it for 15 minutes, it reduces a bit, that's why I add water to make up the difference. I think the less wine you use, the lighter the color will be.

What does wine or beer or ale add to soap?

Not so sure what it adds to soap but I have people who have requested wine and now pomegranate soap so I will give them both a go. I did a search and cannot find much about pomegrantate soap recipes so I guess I will do the same as the wine and just replace the water with the pomegrantate juice and pray it works. I also see some people use pomegranate oil or puree? I think I will try the juice in place of the water as you guys said with the wine unless anyone knows why I should not  :?: :?

Pomegranate juice has natural acid which might neutralize some of your lye. I don't think the color of the juice would last. Pomegranate oil is fine. I don't know about a puree, but I would think it would be the same as the juice. Since the juice or puree has natural sugars, be careful so your soap doesn't overheat.
